Job Summary

As a Batik Artist / Batik Designer, you will be responsible for creating original batik artwork, motifs, patterns and textile designs that align with Kapten Batik's brand identity and seasonal collections.

You will work closely with the Design and Product Development teams to transform creative concepts into commercially viable batik designs suitable for apparel, accessories and other fashion products.

Key Responsibilities
Batik Design & Artwork

• Create original batik motifs, patterns and artwork for fashion collections.
• Develop contemporary interpretations of traditional Malaysian batik motifs.
• Produce hand-drawn, hand-painted or digital artwork depending on project requirements.
• Develop repeat patterns, placement prints and textile designs.
• Experiment with colours, motifs, compositions and different batik techniques.
• Prepare artwork according to design briefs, collection themes and production requirements.
• Maintain consistency in design quality, colour and artistic direction across collections.

Product Development

• Work closely with the Product Development and Design teams to develop new batik designs.
• Translate mood boards, concepts and design briefs into workable batik artwork.
• Adapt artwork according to garment construction, fabric type and product requirements.
• Prepare artwork for sampling and production.
• Review samples and make necessary adjustments to improve the outcome.
• Ensure designs are practical for commercial production while maintaining their artistic value.

Batik Craftsmanship

• Execute or oversee batik techniques such as canting, block printing, brush application, dyeing and related processes.
• Understand fabric preparation, colour application, wax application and basic batik production processes.
• Maintain good craftsmanship and attention to detail throughout the design process.
• Work with suppliers, artisans or production teams when required to ensure the intended artwork is properly executed.

Research & Creative Development

• Research Malaysian heritage, traditional motifs, cultural references, nature, architecture and contemporary fashion trends for design inspiration.
• Develop fresh and commercially relevant batik concepts.
• Stay updated on textile, fashion and print design trends.
• Contribute creative ideas during collection development and brainstorming sessions.
• Build and maintain an organised library of motifs, artwork and design references.

Quality Control

• Check artwork and samples for colour accuracy, composition, motif placement and overall quality.
• Identify design or production issues and recommend improvements.
• Ensure final artwork meets the approved design direction and production standards.

Other Responsibilities

• Maintain proper records of artwork, samples, colour references and design files.
• Support photoshoots, exhibitions, launches or brand events involving batik when required.
• Assist with other creative and product development projects assigned by management.

Pay: RM1,700.00 - RM2,500.00 per month
