Postdoctoral Research Assistant

Microalgae Biota Technology & Innovation Research Centre (ALBIC), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)

Location: Serdang, Selangor, Malaysia

Employment Type: Full-time, Fixed-term

Monthly Remuneration: Starting from RM5,500/month, subject to UPM postdoctoral appointment guidelines

About the Position

The Microalgae Biota Technology & Innovation Research Centre (ALBIC), Universiti Putra Malaysia, is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Assistant to support and strengthen research activities under a University Driven Research Program (UDRP).


The successful candidate will contribute to ALBIC’s growing research portfolio in microalgae biotechnology, algae-based bioprocessing, sustainable aquaculture, circular bioeconomy, environmental biotechnology, bioproduct development, and climate-resilient sustainability solutions.

This position is suited for an early-career researcher with strong publication potential, excellent technical capability, and an interest in developing high-impact, transdisciplinary research with academic, industry, and community partners.

Key Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Research Assistant will be expected to:

  1. Conduct independent and collaborative research related to microalgae biotechnology, bioprocess development, environmental applications, aquaculture, circular bioeconomy, and sustainability.
  2. Design, plan, and implement laboratory, pilot-scale, or field-based experiments, depending on project needs.
  3. Support microalgae cultivation, biomass processing, product development, analytical work, and data interpretation.
  4. Prepare manuscripts for publication in high-impact Citation Indexed Journals.
  5. Assist in the preparation of research proposals, grant applications, technical reports, and project documentation.
  6. Support the development of intellectual property, commercialization pathways, and research translation activities where relevant.
  7. Contribute to ALBIC’s academic, industry, and regional collaboration activities.
  8. Support postgraduate student supervision, research training, workshops, and knowledge-transfer activities.
  9. Assist in strengthening ALBIC’s role as a research and innovation platform for algae biota technology in Malaysia and Asia.
Required Qualifications

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  1. Possess a PhD in a relevant field such as:
  • Microalgae biotechnology
  • Environmental biotechnology
  • Biochemical or bioprocess engineering
  • Environmental science
  • Bio-based product development
  • Related science, engineering, or technology disciplines


  1. The PhD should have been awarded within the last ten years, in line with UPM postdoctoral appointment requirements.
  2. Applicants should demonstrate a strong publication record in Citation Indexed Journals, preferably as first author.
  3. Applicants should have at least five publications within the most recent five years, in accordance with UPM’s additional postdoctoral requirements.
  4. Applicants must be able to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  5. Applicants should have good written and verbal communication skills in English.
  6. Applicants must be in good health and able to undertake research activities required by the project.
Preferred Skills and Experience

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Microalgae cultivation and culture optimisation
  • Algal biomass harvesting, processing, and characterisation
  • Bioprocess development or scale-up
  • Aquaculture, circular aquaculture, or algae-based feed applications
  • Environmental biotechnology and wastewater/resource recovery applications
  • Bioactive compounds, bioproducts, or biorefinery-related research
  • Life cycle thinking, sustainability assessment, or techno-economic analysis
  • Scientific writing, grant writing, and project coordination
  • Industry engagement, community-based research, or translational research
