Job Description

Description: The National University of Singapore invites applications for the position of Research Assistant/Engineer in the Department of Computer Science, School of Computing (SoC). SoC is strongly committed to research excellence in all its dimensions: Searching for fundamental results and insights, developing novel computational solutions to a wide range of applications, building large scale experimental systems, and improving the well-being of society. We seek to play an active role both internationally and locally in the core and emerging areas of Computer Science and Information Systems.

The Research Assistant/Engineer will work on a research project on planning and decision-making for responsible cognitive robotics. The successful candidate will assist the Principal Investigator in designing and implementing a large experimental environment based on space exploration and future human settlement, such as Moon- or Mars-based scenarios. This experimental environment will support a wide range of simulated, physical, and/or hybrid decision-making activities for cognitive robots. The work involves research topics in strategic games, computational cognitive neuroscience, hierarchical and causal reinforcement learning, neuro-symbolic approaches to integrated learning and planning, and transfer learning in sequential decision-making.

The candidate should have:

  • Strong programming and systems engineering skills, preferably with experience in video game development and/or robot programming platforms
  • Good working knowledge of Python, AI development tools, and game development platforms
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following areas: computational cognitive neuroscience, AI planning and decision-making, reinforcement learning, uncertainty modelling in AI, and machine learning
  • A keen interest in working with emerging technologies and frameworks
  • Good communication skills in both written and spoken English
