An onsite marine technician (propulsion) assembles, aligns, and repairs ship drive systems. You will install propellers, shafts, and bossings on-site at shipyards or drydocks. Responsibilities include reading blueprints, rigging heavy components, conducting laser or wire alignment, and performing critical metal fitting to tight marine tolerances.
- Shafting & Alignment: Assemble, fit, and secure intermediate and tail shafts. Perform shafting alignment checks (e.g., dial indicators or laser) to ensure zero eccentricity with the main engine and stern tube.
- Propeller Installation: Rig, hoist, and mount propellers. This includes hydraulic fitting, tightening patent nuts, keying shafts, and checking blue-fit bearing contact between the propeller boss and the shaft taper.
- Bossing's & Stern Tube: Fit and assemble stern tube seals, bearings (e.g., white metal or rubber bearings), and structural bossing's. Verify water-tight integrity and proper lubrication systems.
- Testing & Quality Control: Perform operational dock trials, check vibration levels, and conduct leak and pressure tests before sea trials.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education/Certification: Vocational certification or apprenticeship in marine engineering, shipfitting, or mechanical fitting.
- Tool Proficiency: Ability to work with precision measuring tools (micrometers, dial indicators) and heavy-duty hand/power tools. Experience with hydraulic bolting, oxy-acetylene torches, and crane/rigging operations is a major plus.
