Job Description

Responsibilities

This role will manage a small team of data engineers, owning the operational health of our data platform across pipeline observability, incident response, data quality, tooling, platform stability and cost monitoring. It will require a hands-on team lead, who brings engineering rigour, combined with effective communication and collaboration skills with users as well IT teams.

  1. Oversee the day-to-day operations of data pipelines and platform infrastructure, including scheduling, monitoring, and capacity management, to ensure reliable and timely data delivery across the business.
  2. Own the end-to-end incident response process, including triage, resolution, user comms and post-incident reviews, ensuring recurring issues are identified and permanently resolved within agreed timeframes.
  3. Partner with upstream and downstream teams to prioritise and deliver platform improvements that directly reduce operational toil and improve pipeline stability.
  4. Evaluate, implement, and continuously improve internal tooling and engineering processes, including observability frameworks and workflow automation, with a focus on measurable gains in team efficiency and platform performance.
  5. Act as the primary point of contact and service manager for data operations across business units, translating stakeholder needs into engineering priorities and communicating platform health in non-technical terms.
  6. Lead and mentor a team of data engineers, including setting clear performance goals and fostering a culture of ownership and continuous improvement.
  7. Maintain regular and proactive communication with the Data Engineering Manager and Head of Data, including error trend analysis, cost governance, internal tooling roadmap planning, and escalation management, to ensure leadership has full visibility of platform health.

Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or related discipline) with relevant Big Data and Databricks certifications.
  2. Minimum 15+ years of experience in data engineering, including hands-on expertise in Azure Databricks, Python, SQL, and PySpark.
  3. Proven experience in Data Reliability Engineering (DRE), DevOps, observability, and large-scale data platform management, supporting terabytes of business-critical data with a strong focus on reliability, performance, scalability, and operational excellence.
  4. Strong hands-on experience delivering cloud-based data and analytics solutions using Azure(preferred) or AWS, Databricks, Power BI, AI/BI solutions, and orchestration tools such as Azure Data Factory or Airflow, with demonstrated success in designing, developing, optimizing, and supporting production-grade data pipelines.

Desirable Skills:

  1. Prior experience leading or closely coordinating a small team of data engineers (1–3), or a demonstrated appetite to step into a leadership role — evidenced through mentoring, task delegation, or driving team-level outcomes.
  2. Familiarity with data observability tooling and cost governance practices within cloud platforms, including but not limited to monitoring frameworks, usage reporting, and infrastructure cost optimization.
