JOB SUMMARY

The CMM Programmer/Inspector is responsible for operating, programming, and maintaining Hexagon CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) systems to perform precision measurement and quality inspection of manufactured parts. This role involves creating measurement programs, executing inspection routines, analyzing measurement data, documenting results, and ensuring parts meet specifications and quality standards while maintaining the integrity and functionality of CMM equipment.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Operate and maintain Hexagon CMM machines, including setup, calibration, and routine preventive maintenance to ensure optimal equipment performance and measurement accuracy.
  • Develop, program, and optimize CMM measurement routines and inspection programs using Hexagon software (PC-DMIS or similar); write and test part programs from engineering drawings and CAD models.
  • Perform precision measurement and quality inspection of manufactured parts; execute measurement programs and collect dimensional data according to specifications and requirements.
  • Analyze measurement results and generate inspection reports; compare actual measurements against Engineering tolerances and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) specifications; identify out-of-tolerance conditions and report discrepancies.
  • Troubleshoot measurement discrepancies; investigate measurement errors and equipment issues; implement corrective actions to resolve quality problems and prevent defects.
  • Create and maintain accurate inspection documentation including measurement reports, calibration records, CMM program backups, and inspection logs; organize and archive quality records.
  • Perform equipment calibration and verification using certified reference standards and master parts to ensure measurement system accuracy and repeatability (Gage R&R).
  • Collaborate with Production, Engineering, and Quality Assurance departments to establish inspection plans, measurement procedures, and acceptance criteria; communicate measurement results and quality findings.
  • Assist with quality audits, first-article inspections (FAI), and special inspection projects; prepare required documentation and provide measurement support as needed.
  • Maintain CMM machine cleanliness, fixtures, probes, and accessories; perform routine maintenance and report equipment issues or failures to management.
  • Stay current with CMM software updates, inspection standards (ASME Y14.5, ISO GD&T), and quality system requirements; implement process improvements to enhance measurement efficiency and accuracy.
  • Support training of other technicians or inspectors on CMM operation and measurement techniques; document standard operating procedures and best practices.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED; Associate's degree in Precision Machining, Manufacturing Technology, Engineering, Quality Assurance, or related field preferred.
  • Proven experience of 2-3 years operating and programming Hexagon CMM machines (PC-DMIS, MODUS, or equivalent software); experience with other CMM systems (Zeiss, Mitutoyo, Brown & Sharpe) is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T per ASME Y14.5) and measurement principles; ability to interpret engineering drawings and design specifications.
  • Proficiency with Hexagon CMM software and CAD integration; ability to write complex measurement programs and debug part programs.
  • Knowledge of precision measurement systems, calibration procedures, and measurement uncertainty analysis; understanding of Gage R&R (Repeatability & Reproducibility).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to analyze measurement data, identify trends, and implement corrective actions.
  • Excellent attention to detail and precision; ability to maintain accuracy in measurements and documentation; 99%+ accuracy standard required.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to manage multiple inspection projects, prioritize workload, and meet production deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and ability to learn new software systems quickly; comfort with statistical analysis tools preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to explain measurement results and quality findings to technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Commitment to quality, accuracy, and continuous improvement; ethical standards and integrity in documenting measurement data; ability to maintain confidentiality of inspection results and proprietary information.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and support production schedules.
