Principal Linux Engineer cum Architect

This role is a high-level position within the IT operations team, focusing on the design, implementation, and advanced administration of a complex Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) environment. The primary mandate is to ensure high availability, security, and scalability through automation and profound technical expertise. The role carries ownership of production systems and provides mentorship through 2nd and 3rd level support.
Responsibilities:
- Architect, deploy, and configure Linux server infrastructures across physical, virtual, and public cloud environments, prioritizing high availability, performance, and security.
- Operate and maintain complex RHEL environments, performing incident analysis, root cause determination, and performance tuning for CPU, memory, I/O, and network subsystems.
- Develop and maintain automation scripts and tooling using Shell, Python, and Red Hat Ansible to standardize deployment, patching, and release processes.
- Manage networking components including IP addressing, routing, VLANs, firewalls, DNS, NTP, and load balancing, alongside integration with virtualization platforms like VMware.
- Execute security hardening procedures, manage patch lifecycles, and integrate logging and auditing systems with SIEM solutions in coordination with security teams.
- Engineer and maintain CI/CD pipelines to facilitate efficient and reliable code deployment and infrastructure changes.
- Program and integrate vendor APIs, including those for Red Hat Satellite, Azure, or VMware, to automate system management tasks.
- Design and create advanced Ansible workflows involving complex playbooks, nested structures, and multiple nodes to orchestrate large-scale configurations.
- Assist in the planning and deployment of production RHEL application servers, adhering strictly to established operational processes and team standards.
- Provide 2nd and 3rd level technical support for production systems, resolving complex issues while escalating critical technical challenges to principal engineers for deep investigation.
What You Need to Succeed:
- A degree from a University of Applied Sciences or an equivalent level of proven, professional work experience.
- A minimum of five years of professional experience in IT operations with demonstrable responsibility for managing critical systems or complex processes.
- Expert-level knowledge of Linux system administration, including disk management, process management, package management, and network interface configuration.
- Must have proficiency in designing, creating, and modifying CI/CD pipelines using industry-standard tools such as TeamCity and Jenkins.
- Must have hands-on experience with configuration management tools, specifically Red Hat Ansible, for automating operational tasks and standardizing infrastructure.
- Strong coding skills in Python and proficient use of Git for version control are essential.
- Deep understanding and practical experience with containerization technologies and CI/CD concepts and orchestration tools.
- Experience in managing the full lifecycle of applications, code testing, and working within Version Control Systems.
- Familiarity with the Red Hat software suite, including RHEL, Ansible, and OpenShift, is required.
- Excellent debugging capabilities with the ability to effectively read, understand, and investigate complex code.
- A solid understanding of software architecture patterns, such as monolithic and N-tier designs.
- Proficiency in working with HTTP web servers and RESTful APIs.
- Practical knowledge of public cloud services, particularly deploying and managing RHEL workloads on Azure, GCP, and Google Bare Metal Solution.
- A good command of security principles, including IAM, Linux kernel security features, file permissions, and SSH key management.
- Ability to design and implement innovative technical solutions that meet specific business and technical requirements.
- High tolerance for workload pressure, strong analytical and conceptual skills, and a clear results, cooperation, and service-oriented mindset.
Nice to Have
- Experience programming against vendor APIs for Red Hat Satellite, Azure, GCP, or VMware is a plus.
- Familiarity with integrating and managing MS Defender for Endpoint Linux is advantageous.
