Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Software Engineer role based in WP. Kuala Lumpur. The Software Engineer will design, develop, test, and maintain software components for SCADA and automation systems, focusing on reliability, performance, and integration with hardware and industrial processes. Daily responsibilities include implementing back-end services and data acquisition modules, writing clean and maintainable code, debugging and resolving technical issues, and collaborating with project teams to meet client requirements and timelines. The role also involves participating in system design reviews, documentation of technical specifications, and continuous improvement of existing solutions to enhance system efficiency and stability. The Software Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to support project deployment, commissioning, and post-implementation support.
Duties & Responsibilities
A. Automation Software Development
- Develop, implement and maintain industrial automation software and control applications based on project requirements.
- Develop PLC programs, HMI applications and SCADA applications.
- Translate control philosophies, functional requirements and process requirements into automation software solutions.
- Develop and modify automation software using appropriate programming languages and development tools.
- Optimize existing PLC, HMI and SCADA applications to improve system performance, reliability and maintainability.
- Develop, test and maintain PLC programs for industrial automation and control systems.
- Develop HMI screens, graphics, alarms, trends, data displays and operator interfaces.
- Design and implement control logic using Ladder Diagram (LD), Function Block Diagram (FBD), Sequential Function Chart (SFC), Structured Text (ST) and other applicable programming methods.
- Develop scripting and software logic where required for automation applications.
- Modify and enhance existing PLC and HMI programs according to project requirements and site conditions.
- Perform software configuration, parameter setting and application deployment for automation systems.
B. Automation System Integration
- Integrate PLC and HMI applications with SCADA systems, instrumentation, drives, field devices and other industrial control equipment.
- Configure and troubleshoot industrial communication protocols such as Modbus TCP/RTU, Ethernet/IP, Profinet, OPC UA, MQTT and other applicable protocols.
- Perform data acquisition and communication configuration between PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems and other industrial devices.
- Work with different industrial automation platforms and software development environments.
C. Software Testing, Commissioning & Troubleshooting
- Perform software testing, debugging and validation during development, FAT, SAT, Testing & Commissioning (T&C) and site commissioning.
- Troubleshoot PLC programs, HMI/SCADA applications, communication issues and automation software problems.
- Diagnose and resolve software, configuration and system integration issues.
- Provide technical support for automation systems during project implementation and after-sales support.
- Perform basic IT troubleshooting and support related to industrial PCs, servers, network connectivity, software installation, Windows operating systems and related automation infrastructure.
- Conduct site testing and commissioning to ensure automation software operates according to design specifications.
D. Documentation
- Prepare and maintain software-related project documentation.
- Document PLC programs, HMI applications, communication configurations and system settings.
- Maintain software versions, backups and project source files throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure project documentation is updated according to the latest system configuration.
E. Collaboration & Technical Support
- Work closely with Project Managers, Automation Engineers, technicians, customers and subcontractors to ensure successful project execution.
- Understand project requirements and provide suitable software and automation solutions.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance during project implementation, commissioning and after-sales service.
Requirements
- Candidate must possess at least a Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum CGPA of 3.0.
- Strong interest and/or experience in PLC programming and industrial automation software development.
- Required skills:
- PLC programming.
- HMI development.
- Basic software development and programming concepts.
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profinet, OPC UA, MQTT or similar.
- Knowledge of industrial control systems, instrumentation and process automation.
- Knowledge of IT systems, Windows operating systems, industrial PCs, networking and basic IT troubleshooting.
- Good analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with industrial automation platforms such as CODESYS, Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider, Omron, Mitsubishi, Honeywell, OPTO 22 or similar is an added advantage.
- Basic electrical and control panel knowledge is an added advantage.
