Linux HPC Engineer


Role Summary

Design, deploy, and maintain Linux-based high-performance computing clusters and infrastructure that support compute-intensive workloads (scientific simulation, ML/AI training, data analytics, engineering simulations, etc.).

Key Responsibilities

  • Build, configure, and maintain Linux HPC clusters (RHEL/CentOS/Rocky Linux/Ubuntu)
  • Manage job scheduling systems (Slurm, PBS Pro, LSF, or Grid Engine)
  • Administer parallel/distributed file systems (Lustre, GPFS/Spectrum Scale, BeeGFS, NFS)
  • Configure and troubleshoot high-speed interconnects (InfiniBand, RoCE, Omni-Path)
  • Manage node provisioning and configuration management (xCAT, Warewulf, Bright Cluster Manager, Ansible, Puppet)
  • Monitor cluster health and performance (Ganglia, Prometheus/Grafana, Nagios)
  • Support MPI libraries and compilers (OpenMPI, MVAPICH2, Intel MPI)
  • Manage environment modules / Lmod / Spack for scientific software stacks
  • Optimize workload performance and troubleshoot bottlenecks (compute, storage, network)
  • Handle GPU cluster management (NVIDIA drivers, CUDA, NVLink, GPU scheduling)
  • Capacity planning, patching, security hardening, and OS upgrades
  • Collaborate with researchers/scientists/engineers to tune and support their workloads
  • Maintain documentation and runbooks; participate in on-call rotation

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong Linux systems administration experience (RHEL/CentOS, Ubuntu)
  • Hands-on experience with a job scheduler (Slurm preferred)
  • Scripting skills: Bash, Python; familiarity with Ansible/Puppet/Chef
  • Networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, InfiniBand basics)
  • Experience with parallel file systems (Lustre/GPFS)
  • Understanding of MPI, OpenMP, parallel computing concepts
  • Experience with containers in HPC context (Singularity/Apptainer, Docker)
  • Bachelor's/Master's in CS, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
