Vertical Institute | AI & Technology Training
About the role
Vertical Institute is looking for a Lead Software Engineer to provide technical leadership for a lean, high-performing engineering team building the systems that support our learning platform and internal operations.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You will continue to design, build, review, and improve production systems while setting technical direction, guiding architecture decisions, mentoring engineers, and translating business priorities into an actionable engineering roadmap.
You will work closely with the CEO and cross-functional teams across admissions, sales, finance, and operations to build scalable systems, integrations, automation, and AI-powered solutions.
We are looking for an experienced technical leader who has already operated at Lead or Principal level — this is not a first-time engineering leadership role.
Key responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Architecture
- Set technical direction, engineering standards, and architectural principles for the team.
- Design scalable, secure, and maintainable software systems.
- Make architecture and technology decisions based on business requirements, scalability, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
- Review technical designs and code to maintain high engineering standards.
- Identify and manage technical debt and system risks.
- Partner with the CEO and stakeholders to translate business priorities into an engineering roadmap.
Hands-on Software Engineering
- Design, develop, test, and maintain production-grade web applications and backend systems.
- Continue writing and reviewing code while leading the engineering team.
- Contribute to system design, database architecture, API development, and performance optimisation.
- Troubleshoot complex technical issues and lead the team in resolving production problems.
- Establish and maintain engineering practices covering testing, documentation, version control, and CI/CD.
Systems Integration & Automation
- Build and maintain integrations between the learning platform and third-party systems.
- Integrate systems such as LMS, CRM, payment platforms, analytics tools, and other SaaS applications.
- Develop internal tools and automation to improve workflows across sales, admissions, finance, and operations.
- Evaluate third-party technologies and APIs for integration and automation opportunities.
- Ensure integrations are reliable, secure, and maintainable.
AI & Automation
- Identify opportunities to apply AI and automation to business and operational workflows.
- Design and implement AI-powered features, agents, and workflows using modern AI APIs and tools.
- Work with business stakeholders to identify practical use cases where AI can improve efficiency, customer experience, or decision-making.
- Evaluate emerging AI technologies and determine their practical application within the organisation.
Engineering Team Leadership
- Mentor and coach engineers and support their technical development.
- Conduct code and architecture reviews and provide constructive technical feedback.
- Establish engineering best practices and encourage a culture of ownership and continuous improvement.
- Help the team prioritise work and remove technical blockers.
- Balance delivery speed with code quality, reliability, security, and maintainability.
Stakeholder Management
- Work closely with the CEO and business stakeholders to understand technical requirements and priorities.
- Translate technical concepts and trade-offs into clear business terms.
- Communicate project progress, risks, dependencies, and technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
- Collaborate with Sales, Admissions, Finance, Operations, and other teams to deliver technology solutions that support business goals.
Requirements
- Proven experience operating at Lead Software Engineer, Principal Engineer, Tech Lead, or equivalent level.
- Strong full-stack or backend software engineering background.
- Experience building and maintaining production-grade web applications and software systems.
- Strong understanding of system architecture, database design, API design, and performance optimisation.
- Demonstrated experience making architectural and technical decisions for scalable systems.
- Strong hands-on programming and software development skills.
- Experience with software testing, code reviews, documentation, version control, and CI/CD practices.
- Experience mentoring engineers and providing technical leadership.
- Proven ability to deliver software iteratively without unnecessary over-engineering.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts and trade-offs to senior non-technical stakeholders.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field is preferred.
Good to have
- Ruby on Rails experience.
- Experience with EdTech, LMS, or learning platforms.
- Hands-on experience with AI APIs, LLMs, AI agents, or automation tools.
- Experience integrating CRM, payment, analytics, or SaaS platforms.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure and modern DevOps practices.
- Experience working in a startup or scale-up environment.
