Zoala's roots are etched in the true-to-life story of a happy little girl whose life took a devastating turn with the deterioration of her mental wellness. Jeff Lee, Zoala's CEO, grimly recollects how his goddaughter started to exhibit her mental health decline as she transitioned into her teenage years.

Despite their deep love, the girl's parents did not know how to approach her aggravating condition. The once-a-month therapy session with a counsellor did not provide the continuity in treatment she needed. Where the 15-year-old girl could not turn to anyone else due to her perceived stigmatisation of mental wellness issues, she spiralled into devastation and attempted suicide – fortunately, she survived.

With this adverse experience as the trigger, Zoala was conceived for an Executive MBA entrepreneurship/startup project at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School. The project team envisioned leveraging cutting-edge technology as an enabler for connection and continuity to prevent, detect and act against mental wellness deterioration at the earliest onset.
