A common mistake job seekers often make is to mistake a cover letter for a resume. They think that to write a cover letter is to simply copy or repeat all the points written in a resume. It's not that simple! A cover letter is an opportunity for you to emphasize and elaborate on all the points that you've stated in your resume. Still confused with how to write one? Here are the best tips on how to come out with the perfect cover letter!

1. Use a Narrative

A resume is a brief explanation about yourself in a bullet point style. Instead of using paragraphs or long sentences, make it as simple and straightforward as possible. This is why a cover letter becomes the best opportunity for you to elaborate on every point that you wish to highlight. Consider this a platform to expand the key points and showcase your personality using full sentences. Never ever write a cover letter in point or bullet form.

2. Highlight Skills, Don't Emphazise Excitement

Yes, we all tend to brag when it comes to 'selling' ourselves on the job market. You may want to highlight your skills but don't overdo it. The key here is to choose 1 or 2 of your best skills and try to link it to some specific past projects, achievements or assignments to show that you're an expert in that area.

You don't have to emphasize how excited you are to get the job because the hiring manager is obviously aware of that. It's a common mistake that job seekers make when it comes to writing a cover letter.

3. Tell a Story About Yourself

It may sound cheesy but you can give it a try! Remember that hiring managers are looking for humans, not robots, so why not grab their attention by telling a story? It gives a chance for your cover letter to stand out from among the rest. You don't have to write a novel, simply a short anecdote about yourself.
