Despite the city’s ups and downs, the municipal administration of Melaka has continued to exist. In 1824, the municipality was known as “The Town and The Fort of Malacca”, administered by the “Committee of Assessors” under the British government.\n\nIn 1848, the East India Act XIX emphasized the establishment of a Municipal Committee to replace the Committee of Assessors. This Act provided for five Council Members, led by a Resident Councillor, who was recognized as the Municipal Commissioner.\n\nThe East India Act XXVII of 1856 gave Municipal Commissioners the authority to act as trustees, with the power to sue and be sued. On 1 January 1887, the Straits Settlements Municipal Ordinance approved a municipal boundary of 1.4 square miles, which was expanded to 4.2 square miles in 1930 under the 1913 Act 133.\n\nOn 1 January 1977, under the Local Government Act 171 (1976), the Melaka Municipality was merged into the Historic Melaka Municipal Council (MPMBB), with an administrative area of 114.7 square miles (303 sq. km).\n\nMPMBB played a central role in developing Melaka into a dynamic, progressive, and beautiful city. Sejarah Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah (MBMB) lahir bersama sejarah Melaka. Walaupun Melaka telah melalui zaman jatuh bangunnya, Perbandaran Melaka terus wujud. Pada tahun 1824, Perbandaran Melaka dinamakan sebagai \"The Town and The Fort of Malacca\", ditadbir oleh \"Comittee of Assessors\" di bawah Kerajaan Inggeris.

Pada tahun 1848, Akta East India XIX, telah menekankan supaya diwujudkan \"Jawatankuasa Perbandaran\" bagi menggantikan \"The Committee of Assessors\". Akta ini memperuntukkan lima orang Ahli Majlis yang diketuai oleh seorang \"Resident Counsillor\" yang dikenali sebagai Pesuruhjaya Perbandaran.

Akta East India XXVII 1856 telah memberi kuasa kepada Pesuruhjaya-pesuruhjaya Perbandaran menjadi pemegang amanah dan boleh mendakwa dan didakwa. MPMBB merupakan penggerak utama dalam menjadikan Melaka sebagai sebuah bandaraya yang dinamik, maju dan indah. Kawasan pentadbirannya maju serentak dengan pembangunan di keseluruhan negeri Melaka, dimana tumpuan ditekankan kepada sektor-sektor pertanian, perindustrian dan yang terkini perlancongan.

Pembangunan infrastruktur begitu menonjol sekali, menandingi negeri yang paling maju di Malaysia. Keadaan ini mempercepatkan aliran masuk pelabur-pelabur untuk menanam modal lantas mewujudkan peluang perkerjaan kepada penduduk-penduduknya.

Pada 15 April 2003, Majlis Perbandaran Melaka Bandaraya Bersejarah telah dinaiktaraf kepada Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah (MBMB). Dengan pengiktirafan ini, MBMB akan mempertingkatkan lagi mutu perkhidmatan kepada masyarakat di Melaka khususnya dan para pelancong amnya. Kemajuan dan kemakmuran yang dicapai sungguh luar biasa.

Pada 1 Januari 2010, satu lagi Pihak Berkuasa Tempatan diwujudkan iaitu Majlis Perbandaran Hang Tuah Jaya (MPHTJ). Kawasan pentadbiran MPHTJ ini meliputi 57.66 km persegi daripada kawasan pentadbiran Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah (MBMB). Manakala kawasan pentadbiran baru MBMB pula bertambah sebanyak 30.86 km persegi. Keluasan kawasan MBMB kini adalah 270.39 km persegi.
