About myCRO Sdn Bhd
MyCRO Sdn Bhd is the first university startup established by UKM researchers. The company is a owned by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia through its holding company the UKM Holdings Sdn Bhd. The equity is shared between UKM and the founders who are researchers from UKM. The setting up of MyCRO forms part of the transformation plan of UKM to translate research and services into commercial ventures as well as setting up spin-out companies.
MyCRO is a contract research organization and it will undertake contract research from individuals, companies, other CROs and also research institutions. MyCRO will initially focus heavily on the bioanalytical services relevant to the pharmaceuticals and also medical devices. The market for this globally is in the billions of dollars. There are currently few laboratories for testing which have GLP or ISO accreditation in Malaysia and hence the majority of tests have to be outsourced to foreign laboratories. In addition, routine chemistries for clinical trials are also sent overseas by CROs operating from other South East Asian countries. The costs of tests and conducting clinical trials have escalated in the USA, Europe and even in China and India. MyCRO Sdn Bhd will fill a huge gap in the local pharmaceutical industry and also the needs in product testing including medical devices, cosmetics, food and also animal testing. The networking with international partners will ensure the highest standard and quality of testing and efficient delivery of valid results.
MyCRO will offer a wide range of services including pharmaceutical analysis, toxicology tests, animal testing, clinical trials (bioavailability and bioequivalence studies), molecular diagnostics and oxidative assays.
History
The idea for MyCRO was first mooted by its founders in 2007 and the idea received the support from the UKM Vice Chancellor who believes that academic entrepreneurship should become a culture within UKM as it moves towards the transformation programme and become a world class university. In 2008, the business plan was submitted and approved and in 2009 the company was registered. The name MyCRO was chosen as it reflects the Malaysian origin of the company and the MyCRO has the same pronunciation as micro depicting the level of depth of the analysis that the company will offer. MyCRO was awarded the Bionexus status by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation via the Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation, the first such company from a university given such a recognition.The space for the office and laboratories was assigned by the UKM Medical Centre and the renovation was completed in September 2010. MyCRO now operates from the 12th Floor, Clinical Block at the UKM Medical Centre which is truly an appropriate location for the kind of business and services MyCRO is offering.
Product & Services
MyCRO offers services under four divisions namely: pharmaceutical analysis, toxicology testing, oxidative tests and molecular diagnostics. MyCRO also offers consultancy services as well as training programmes related to its services.
Financial
MyCRO is fully financed by UKM through its commercial arms i.e. the UKM Holdings Sdn Bhd and UKM Technology Sdn Bhd. Equity are shared between UKM and the founders.
