Job Purpose

The Fleet Reliability Manager is responsible for maximizing fleet availability, reliability, and maintenance effectiveness across the company's heavy vehicle fleet.

The role leads workshop operations, preventive maintenance programs, technical troubleshooting, breakdown reduction initiatives, spare parts management, and maintenance performance improvement to ensure the fleet operates safely, efficiently, and with minimal downtime.

Working closely with the Fleet Operations, Operations Planning, and Management teams, the Fleet Reliability Manager plays a critical role in supporting business growth by improving fleet uptime, extending asset life, reducing maintenance costs, and ensuring operational readiness.

This is a high-impact leadership role where maintenance quality, fleet reliability, and technical decision-making directly influence operational performance, customer service levels, and business results.

 

Education Preferred

  • Diploma or Degree in:
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Automotive Engineering
    • Heavy Vehicle Technology
    • Maintenance Engineering
    • Fleet Management
    • Automotive Technology
    • Or related technical disciplines

Alternative Qualifications

  • Candidates with Technical Certificates, SKM qualifications, or equivalent vocational training in automotive, heavy vehicle, or maintenance-related fields are welcome to apply.

  • Candidates with strong relevant experience in heavy vehicle maintenance, workshop leadership, and fleet reliability improvement will be given full consideration regardless of academic background.

Essential Experience

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in heavy commercial vehicle maintenance, fleet maintenance, workshop operations, or related technical roles.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a supervisory, managerial, or leadership position within a workshop or fleet maintenance environment.
  • Proven experience in one or more of the following industries:
    • Bulk cement transportation
    • Bulk tanker operations
    • Quarry operations
    • Heavy haulage
    • Construction logistics
    • Large commercial transport fleets
  • Strong hands-on experience in:
    • Fleet reliability management
    • Preventive maintenance planning
    • Workshop operations management
    • Breakdown diagnosis and troubleshooting
    • Root cause analysis
    • Spare parts management
    • Maintenance cost control
    • Heavy vehicle technical systems

Essential Technical Competencies

  • Strong understanding of preventive and predictive maintenance principles.
  • Ability to analyse vehicle failures and implement long-term corrective actions.
  • Strong knowledge of heavy vehicle mechanical systems, including engines, transmissions, braking systems, suspension systems, and pneumatic systems.
  • Experience developing maintenance schedules and reliability improvement programs.
  • Strong understanding of workshop productivity, maintenance KPIs, and fleet performance measurement.
  • Ability to balance operational requirements with maintenance priorities to maximise fleet availability.

Technical & Systems Skills

  • Good computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to prepare maintenance reports, performance analyses, and operational summaries.
  • Experience using fleet maintenance systems, workshop management systems, fleet management software, or similar platforms is an advantage.
  • Ability to use maintenance data to drive decision-making and continuous improvement.

Leadership Competencies

  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Ability to lead workshop supervisors, foremen, technicians, and support personnel.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
  • Ability to build accountability, discipline, and technical standards within the workshop.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder management skills when working with Operations, Fleet Management, Procurement, and external vendors.

  • Experience managing fleets of more than 100 commercial vehicles.
  • Experience implementing maintenance management systems, workshop digitization initiatives, or maintenance process improvements.
  • Experience establishing maintenance KPIs, reliability programs, or fleet performance dashboards.
  • Experience managing tyre performance programs and tyre cost optimisation initiatives.
  • Professional certifications related to maintenance, reliability, engineering, or fleet management.
  • Exposure to ISO, safety management systems, or structured continuous improvement methodologies.

Responsibilities

1. Fleet Reliability & Availability Management

  • Drive fleet reliability initiatives to maximize vehicle availability and operational readiness.
  • Monitor fleet performance, breakdown trends, recurring defects, and downtime drivers.
  • Investigate recurring technical failures and implement permanent corrective actions.
  • Develop and execute reliability improvement plans for critical fleet assets.
  • Establish performance targets for fleet availability, reliability, and maintenance effectiveness.
  • Support operational teams by ensuring sufficient fleet readiness to meet business demands.

2. Preventive Maintenance Management

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve preventive maintenance programs.
  • Ensure maintenance schedules are properly planned and executed on time.
  • Monitor preventive maintenance compliance and vehicle service intervals.
  • Optimize maintenance frequency and servicing strategies based on vehicle performance and operating conditions.
  • Reduce dependence on reactive repairs through proactive maintenance planning.
  • Continuously improve maintenance planning processes to enhance fleet reliability.

3. Workshop Operations Leadership

  • Lead and manage daily workshop operations, supervisors, foremen, technicians, and support personnel.
  • Ensure efficient allocation of manpower, tools, equipment, and workshop resources.
  • Monitor repair progress and workshop productivity.
  • Establish clear maintenance priorities based on operational requirements.
  • Improve repair turnaround time and workshop efficiency.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping, safety, and discipline within the workshop.

4. Breakdown Management & Root Cause Analysis

  • Lead investigations into major breakdowns, vehicle failures, and recurring technical issues.
  • Perform root cause analysis and identify underlying causes of failures.
  • Develop corrective and preventive action plans to eliminate repeat breakdowns.
  • Track implementation effectiveness and monitor improvement results.
  • Maintain records of major breakdown investigations and corrective actions.
  • Promote a problem-solving culture focused on long-term reliability rather than short-term repairs.

5. Fleet Maintenance Cost Management

  • Monitor maintenance expenditure and cost trends across the fleet.
  • Analyze repair costs and identify opportunities for cost optimization.
  • Improve maintenance cost efficiency without compromising safety or reliability.
  • Evaluate repair-versus-replacement decisions for major components and assets.
  • Support preparation of maintenance budgets and forecasts.
  • Monitor cost per vehicle, cost per kilometre, and other relevant maintenance performance indicators.

6. Technical Compliance & Fleet Standards

  • Ensure all vehicles are maintained in accordance with company standards, regulatory requirements, and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Ensure fleet roadworthiness and operational compliance at all times.
  • Coordinate defect rectification and compliance-related maintenance activities.
  • Support vehicle inspections and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair histories, and technical documentation.
  • Establish and enforce workshop technical standards and maintenance procedures.

7. Tyre Management & Asset Performance

  • Monitor tyre performance, tyre life, and tyre-related operating costs.
  • Investigate abnormal tyre wear and tyre damage incidents.
  • Develop initiatives to improve tyre lifespan and reduce tyre-related costs.
  • Ensure proper tyre inspection, maintenance, and replacement practices.
  • Monitor tyre performance trends and identify opportunities for improvement.

8. Safety, Quality & Continuous Improvement

  • Promote a strong safety culture within the workshop and maintenance operations.
  • Ensure maintenance work is performed safely and according to established procedures.
  • Conduct audits on maintenance quality and workshop practices.
  • Identify opportunities to improve maintenance processes, systems, and operational efficiency.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives that enhance reliability, productivity, and cost performance.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, and operational excellence.

9. Reporting & Performance Management

  • Monitor and report key maintenance and reliability KPIs.
  • Prepare management reports on fleet performance, maintenance effectiveness, and improvement initiatives.
  • Analyze performance trends and recommend corrective actions.
  • Support management decision-making through accurate maintenance and reliability data.
  • Develop and maintain performance dashboards for workshop and fleet reliability activities.
