We are looking for an experienced and commercially driven Financial Controller to lead the finance function of a fast-growing retail business

This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow management, business performance, internal controls and supporting management in making sound commercial decisions

The successful candidate will manage a finance team of approximately 10 staff and work closely with Operations, Category Management, Supply Chain, Procurement and senior management

For the right candidate, this role offers the opportunity to grow into a broader finance leadership role as the business continues to scale

Key Responsibilities

- Lead and manage the overall finance and accounting function

- Manage, develop and strengthen a finance team of approximately 10 staff

- Ensure timely and accurate monthly management accounts and financial reporting

- Lead budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning and treasury management

- Manage banking relationships, financing facilities and funding requirements

- Monitor company and store-level financial performance, including sales, gross margin, operating costs and profitability

- Provide meaningful financial analysis and recommendations to management

- Develop and monitor key financial and operating KPIs

- Analyse store performance and identify areas for profitability and efficiency improvement

- Evaluate financial returns and payback for new stores, capex and business initiatives

- Monitor product margins, promotions, rebates, supplier income and cost movements

- Strengthen inventory controls, including stock reconciliation, shrinkage, write-offs, ageing and slow-moving inventory

- Improve working capital management, including inventory levels, supplier terms and payment cycles

- Ensure proper reconciliation of POS sales, cash, cards, e-wallets and bank settlements

- Work closely with Operations, Commercial, Procurement and Warehouse teams to improve business performance

- Strengthen internal controls, approval processes, SOPs and segregation of duties

- Drive improvements in finance processes, systems, automation and management reporting

- Ensure compliance with MFRS, taxation, SST, e-Invoicing and statutory requirements

- Liaise with external auditors, tax agents, bankers and other stakeholders

- Support senior management on expansion, financing, investment and strategic initiatives

Requirements

- Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field

- Professional qualification such as ACCA, CPA, ICAEW, CIMA or equivalent

- Minimum 12–15 years of relevant finance experience

- At least 5 years in a finance leadership role

- Experience in retail, wholesale, FMCG, grocery, pharmacy or other multi-outlet businesses is highly preferred

- Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, treasury and cash flow management

- Strong understanding of inventory management, gross margin, working capital and retail operations

- Experience dealing with banks and financing facilities

- Proven experience managing and developing a finance team

- Strong Excel skills and experience with ERP, accounting and POS systems

- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities

- Able to translate financial information into clear commercial recommendations

- Hands-on, proactive and comfortable working in a fast-growing environment

- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills

- Commercially minded, results-oriented and able to challenge the business constructively
