Job Description

Responsibilities

A house of artisanal tradition, Batik Village Malaysia has long aimed to express an identity that blends craftsmanship with a deep respect for heritage, centering on refined and timeless batik collections. As an independent company, we believe in the freedom of creativity, nurture human potential, and act to have a positive impact within the Malaysian batik industry.

What impact you can create:

The Batik Artisan is responsible for creating exceptional hand-drawn and hand-painted batik personalization designs on silks. The role requires strong artistic ability, precision, and attention to detail, while consistently respecting high standards of craftsmanship, quality, and integrity. Beyond that, the pieces serve as a means of conveying emotions with fine details and artistic expression, captivating clients with their unique personalities.

  • Review personalization orders and prepare all necessary materials, including batik wax and paints.
  • Hand-draw and hand-paint client-personalized designs on silks with precision and consistency.
  • Apply creativity and imagination to your work while valuing the skill and fine craftsmanship in your pieces.
  • Perform freehand touch-ups and quality checks throughout the process.
  • Create custom digital artwork using Procreate, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Maintain a production level while meeting quality standards.
  • Clean and maintain batik tools, equipment, and the workshop.
  • Respond to workshop emails and support daily workshop operations.
  • Follow all health, safety, security, confidentiality, dress code, and presentation requirements.

What you will bring to the role:

  • The ability to handle the canting with a steady hand, ensuring a continuous, unbroken flow of liquid wax.
  • Maintaining uniform line thickness throughout the design, preventing the wax from pooling, dripping, or creating unintended blotches.
  • The skill to execute incredibly fine, detailed filling patterns (like tiny dots, scales, or hatches) within the larger motifs.
  • Knowing exactly when the wax is at the perfect temperature. If it is too hot, it runs too fast; if it is too cold, it clogs the canting and fails to penetrate the fabric.
  • Ensuring the wax penetrates completely through to the back of the cloth, which is essential for creating a perfect resist that blocks dyes from both sides.
  • The ability to visualize the final piece in reverse. Because batik is dyed from light to dark colors, the batik artisan must accurately plan which areas to wax, dye, remove wax from, and re-wax.
  • A deep understanding of how different dyes (natural or synthetic) interact with various silks to achieve vibrant, bleeding-free colors.
  • Mastery over traditional, complex geometric and organic motifs, understanding their symbolic meanings and strict design rules.
  • The capacity to freehand complex, symmetrical patterns across meters of fabric without losing the balance or proportion of the design.
  • The physical and mental stamina to work for weeks or months on a single piece of cloth, requiring hours of bent-over, highly focused concentration.
  • Maintaining the same level of physical precision from the first stroke to the final wax application.
  • High performance and play at the top – own your work and never settle for “good enough”.

Required qualifications:

  • Certificate/Diploma/Bachelor's Degree in Textile Design and/or any equivalent education or relevant experience.
  • Extensive experience as a batik artisan painting on silks, with at least 5 years of experience.
  • Strong batik drawing and painting skills with a steady hand and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Creative and artistic orientation, committed with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Experience with Procreate, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Ability to follow strict artistic and technical guidelines.
  • Strong organization, time management, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently.
  • Professional demeanor and commitment to high standards of craftsmanship and excellence.

This role is highly rewarding for the right candidate who enjoys working in small, tight-knit teams. Think big, take ownership, and help shape the future of the Malaysian batik industry.
