As our Associate Director – Electrical Engineering based in Kuala Lumpur, you will play a pivotal leadership role in driving the delivery and growth of our mission-critical portfolio in Malaysia and across the wider APAC region.

Reporting to the Regional Data Centre Director APAC, you will lead the development, design, and coordination of electrical engineering services across complex data centre and infrastructure projects, ensuring technical excellence, programme performance, and commercial discipline in line with Black & White’s global standards. Working closely with regional leadership, you will strengthen engineering capability, mentor high-performing teams, and act as a key interface between front-end advisory and project delivery, while championing Black & White’s “One Team” culture.

Technical Leadership & Design Excellence

• Lead and mentor multi-disciplinary engineering design teams to deliver high-quality electrical engineering solutions across diverse building typologies, particularly mission-critical data centres
• Lead the design of mission-critical electrical systems, including HV and LV distribution, UPS and critical backup systems, and generators and emergency power infrastructure
• Oversee end-to-end electrical system architecture, from utility intake through to the critical load
• Provide technical leadership on resilience and redundancy strategies (e.g., N+1, 2N, 2N+1)
• Drive master planning and utility interface design, including HV integration and coordination with TNB requirements
• Ensure designs comply with Malaysian codes and authority requirements (e.g., Electricity Supply Act 1990, Electricity Regulations 1994, Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga) requirements, MS IEC 60364, UBBL, BOMBA) and relevant international standards
• Ensure all calculations, schedules, and design documentation meet industry, legal, and B&W standards, delivering “Right First Time” outcomes
• Conduct technical reviews of drawings and documentation to ensure accuracy, compliance, and consistency with company standards
• Act as the technical authority across multiple large-scale projects, leading coordination with Mechanical, PHE, Fire Protection, and ELV / ICT disciplines to deliver integrated design solutions

Project Delivery & Commercial Awareness

• Manage multiple project teams across the full project lifecycle, from concept to testing and commissioning
• Drive value engineering, risk mitigation strategies, and key technical decision-making
• Maintain oversight of commercial dashboards, invoicing, and financial performance
• Monitor risk, performance, and internal controls to maintain quality, programme, and cost discipline
• Identify scope and scheduling changes in line with change control processes, maintaining planning integrity and commercial control
• Ensure manufacturing, installation, and testing and commissioning activities meet functional specifications and client requirements
• Conduct lessons learned reviews to improve productivity and future project delivery

People Leadership & Collaboration

• Build, lead, and develop the electrical engineering team in Kuala Lumpur, mentoring senior engineers and technical specialists
• Build a scalable, high-performing electrical engineering capability and succession strength
• Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence
• Support and contribute to the Company’s Technical Committee in advancing design excellence, innovation, and compliance
• Chair and facilitate technical and coordination meetings effectively

Innovation & Digital Engineering

• Champion digital engineering tools such as BIM and advanced analytics
• Drive adoption of emerging technologies, including power solutions for liquid-cooled, air-cooled, and hybrid data centre systems, renewable energy integration, energy storage, and smart grid solutions
• Define and uphold electrical engineering standards, frameworks, and best practices

Client Engagement & Business Development

• Lead client engagements and provide strategic advisory on electrical design and optimisation
• Build trusted relationships with clients including hyperscalers, colocation and telco operators, and developers
• Support business development, proposals, and winning new work in Malaysia and the wider region
• Represent B&W as a thought leader in data centre electrical engineering through industry forums, conferences, and publications
• Accept responsibility for additional strategic or operational tasks as required

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES (Resources)

• Responsible for leading and developing the electrical engineering team in Kuala Lumpur
• Responsible for managing team performance against the team plan, with a focus on resourcing and profitability
• Accountable for technical and project decision-making, and for the quality, compliance, and commercial performance of electrical deliverables

EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIREMENT

• Bachelor’s degree (BSc / BEng / B.Tech) in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
• Registered Professional Engineer with Practising Certificate (Ir., PEPC) with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), or Chartered Engineer (CEng) / equivalent professional accreditation, highly regarded
• Electrical Engineer competency certification with the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga) advantageous
• Membership of a recognised professional body (e.g., IEM, IET, IEEE) preferred
• Sound working knowledge of Malaysian and international codes and standards (e.g., IEC, IEEE, TIA-942), and health & safety legislation (e.g., OSHA 1994)
• Proficiency in industry-standard electrical design and calculation software (e.g., ETAP, Amtech, DIALux, AutoCAD, Revit / BIM 360 / ACC) and MS Office

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS (minimum)

• Typically 10+ years of experience in electrical (MEP) engineering design with consultancies, design firms, data centre operators and/or telco infrastructure projects, including significant experience leading teams and projects
• Significant experience in complex electrical engineering design and specification across diverse building typologies; mission-critical data centre design experience is strongly preferred
• Strong technical expertise in HV/LV distribution, UPS, and standby generation systems, with a solid understanding of Mechanical, PHE, Fire Protection, and ELV interfaces
• Proven track record of delivering projects to both technical and commercial objectives
• Experience delivering projects in Malaysia and familiarity with TNB, Energy Commission, and local authority requirements and submission processes
• Experience leading and mentoring multi-disciplinary engineering teams
• Demonstrated experience contributing to business growth, including client development and representing the organisation at senior-level engagements
• High level of technical skill, with the ability to communicate complex technical matters clearly to clients and teams
• Experience driving continuous improvement in engineering design processes and project delivery standards
• Ability to travel locally and internationally as required
