Finds and implements ways to reduce cloud waste and improve resource efficiency while maintaining required performance, reliability, security, and availability. Works with finance, engineering, product, platform, and operations teams to understand cloud workloads, cost patterns, service requirements, and technical constraints. Uses billing, utilization, and performance information to identify, prioritize, and track optimization opportunities.

A Cloud Cost Optimization Analyst examines cloud bills, usage, budgets, and resource allocation to identify cost drivers and savings opportunities. Prepares forecasts, reports, and recommendations covering areas such as idle resources, underused capacity, storage, data transfer, and pricing options. A Cloud Optimization Engineer implements technical improvements through automation, configuration changes, architecture updates, scheduling, rightsizing, and resource lifecycle controls. A Cloud Optimization Manager leads optimization programs, sets goals and governance, manages teams or vendors, and coordinates cloud cost priorities across the organization.

Reviews cloud resources and application architectures to identify opportunities such as resizing compute, scheduling non-production environments, improving storage tiers, reducing unnecessary data movement, optimizing databases, selecting appropriate services, or adjusting workload placement. Evaluates commitment plans and other pricing arrangements where appropriate, and partners with service owners to ensure changes fit operational needs.

Establishes or improves tagging, cost allocation, budgets, alerts, forecasts, and showback or chargeback reporting so teams can understand and manage their consumption. Tracks approved actions and validates realized savings after changes are made. Checks for unintended effects on availability, performance, or user experience, documents results and assumptions, and contributes to FinOps practices and continuous improvement.

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, information technology, finance, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered
• Experience in cloud cost optimization, FinOps, cloud operations, platform engineering, DevOps, or cost analysis
• Familiarity with AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, or another major cloud provider
• Strong understanding of cloud pricing, billing data, usage metrics, and resource allocation
• For analyst roles, strong data analysis skills and proficiency with spreadsheets, SQL, dashboards, or cost management tools
• For engineering roles, experience with scripting or programming, infrastructure as code, automation, and cloud architecture
• Understanding of compute, storage, networking, databases, containers, and managed cloud services
• Experience with rightsizing, scheduling, autoscaling, storage optimization, or resource lifecycle management is an asset
• Ability to assess cost-saving options alongside performance, reliability, security, and service requirements
• Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to investigate cost anomalies and validate savings
• Clear communication and collaboration skills when working with finance, engineering, product, and operations teams
• Familiarity with tagging, budgets, forecasting, cost allocation, and showback or chargeback processes
• Relevant cloud, FinOps, finance, or engineering certifications are beneficial
• Program leadership, target ownership, budget oversight, and cross-team governance experience may be expected for manager-level roles
