Job Description

Responsibilities

A Signage Designer is responsible for conceptualising, designing, and detailing visual graphics and physical structures that guide, inform, or advertise to people in architectural, retail, and public environments.

The comprehensive job scope is broken down into five core pillars:

1. Conceptual Design & Creative Visualization

  • Develop visual concepts: Create original design layouts, mood boards, and aesthetic directions for indoor and outdoor signs.
  • Incorporate branding guidelines: Align typography, color palettes, and logos seamlessly with the client's corporate identity.
  • Environmental graphic design (EGD): Visualize how 2D designs will look and function in 3D spaces, such as wayfinding systems for malls, offices, or transit hubs.
2. Technical Drawings & Material Specification

  • Produce shop drawings: Create precise, scaled architectural elevations, section views, and engineering-ready layouts for fabrication.
  • Select appropriate materials: Specify suitable substrates, finishes, and illumination methods (e.g., acrylic, aluminum, LED neon, vinyl).
  • Verify architectural constraints: Study blueprints, site plans, and floor layouts to ensure correct mounting methods and structural integrity.
3. Site Surveying & Compliance

  • Conduct site assessments: Measure physical installation sites, check visibility angles, and analyze ambient lighting conditions.
  • Adhere to local regulations: Ensure designs comply with building codes, accessibility laws (such as ADA or BCA regulations), and zoning bylaws.
  • Audit structural safety: Collaborate with engineers to ensure external or large-scale signs can withstand weather conditions like wind loads.
4. Fabrication & Vendor Coordination

  • Prepare production files: Output clean, vector-ready files optimized for CNC routers, laser cutters, large-format printers, and vinyl plotters.
  • Liaise with fabricators: Work closely with the workshop production team to clarify design intents and troubleshoot assembly challenges.
  • Oversee quality control: Inspect prototypes and finished products prior to deployment to ensure color accuracy and material standards.
5. Project & Stakeholder Management

  • Present ideas to clients: Deliver design pitches, explain spatial logic, and integrate client feedback into revised iterations.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally: Coordinate timelines and installation workflows with project managers, interior designers, and main contractors.
  • Manage design deadlines: Keep track of project milestones from the initial brief through to final site handover.
