Senior Mentor (Full-Time, Onsite)
About the Role
ReadingLAB is looking for an experienced senior mentor who puts the education of our community’s children and teens first. We have our own pedagogy and philosophy of teaching, and we train every mentor in how we do things. We are hiring for experience because we need someone who can think on their feet and pick up our approach quickly. That means someone who can read a classroom, manage children well, and make sound decisions in the moment.
This is a full-time role. Teaching the classics well takes careful preparation (yes, we read the classics with our children and teens!), and our senior mentors set the standard for the rest of the team.
About ReadingLAB
ReadingLAB mentors children and teens aged 3 to 17 in reading English storybooks and literature, discussion, essay writing, and more. Our methods are developed in-house and refined through years of working with our students.
Teaching Responsibilities
- Young children: Teach foundational reading skills, including phonics, to start their reading journey.
- Older children: Build strong reading habits, fluency, and comprehension, and develop both spoken and written storytelling.
- Teens: Lead wide reading, from classics like Edgar Allan Poe to modern authors like Neil Gaiman. Guide text analysis, run discussions on thought-provoking topics, and coach students to write thoughtful, well-argued essays.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Learn and apply ReadingLAB’s pedagogy faithfully, then help pass it on to junior mentors.
- Mentor, train, and support junior mentors, including observing classes, running mock classes, and giving constructive feedback.
- Review lesson plans, lesson reviews, grading, and progress reports so they meet ReadingLAB’s standards.
- Handle classroom situations with sound judgement, from behaviour issues to students who need a different approach.
- Meet with parents to discuss student progress and handle concerns professionally.
- Plan and lead extracurricular events, including camps and student showcases.
- Record videos for progress reviews and promotional content.
- Work closely with management on team planning, scheduling, and day-to-day operations.
What We’re Looking For
- At least 3 years of experience teaching or mentoring children or teens, preferably in English, literature, or literacy.
- Experience leading, training, or supervising other teachers or staff.
- Strong analytical skills. You can see why a lesson is or isn’t working and adjust.
- Confident, quick decision-making when classroom situations change suddenly.
- A fast learner who is open to setting aside old habits and teaching the ReadingLAB way.
- Excellent spoken and written English, with a high standard of grammar.
- An avid reader with a real love of literature, including classic fiction and poetry.
- Genuine passion for working with children and teens.
- Available to work full-time, onsite, including weekday evenings.
