Job Purpose
The Letter of Credit (LC) Expert is responsible for managing and overseeing complex import and export documentary credit transactions, ensuring compliance with UCP 600, ISBP, ICC guidelines, regulatory requirements, and internal policies. The role serves as a subject matter expert in documentary credits, providing technical guidance, managing risks, and supporting operational excellence within Trade Finance.
Key ResponsibilitiesTransaction Processing & Verification
- Review, advise, issue, amend, and process import and export Letters of Credit.
- Examine shipping and trade documents presented under documentary credits.
- Ensure all transactions comply with UCP 600, ISBP, URR, and applicable regulations.
- Identify discrepancies in trade documentation and recommend appropriate action.
- Authorize and approve high-value or complex LC transactions within delegated authority limits.
Risk Management & Compliance
- Ensure adherence to AML, sanctions, KYC, and trade compliance requirements.
- Assess documentary and operational risks associated with LC transactions.
- Escalate potential compliance breaches, irregularities, and risk events promptly.
- Support internal and external audit requirements.
Customer & Stakeholder Support
- Act as the subject matter expert for LC-related enquiries from customers, relationship managers, and internal stakeholders.
- Provide guidance and training to junior team members and operations staff.
- Support problem resolution and process improvement initiatives.
Process Improvement
- Participate in system enhancement projects and automation initiatives.
- Review existing workflows and recommend improvements to increase efficiency and reduce operational risk.
- Assist in developing standard operating procedures and operational guidelines.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, Banking, Economics, or related discipline.
- Professional certifications such as CDCS (Certified Documentary Credit Specialist) are highly preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 7 years of experience in Trade Finance Operations, with strong exposure to Letters of Credit.
- Proven experience handling complex import/export LC transactions.
- Sound knowledge of UCP 600, ISBP, URR, and international trade finance practices.
- Experience in banking operations or financial institutions is preferred.
Technical Knowledge & Skills
- Strong expertise in documentary credits and trade finance products.
- Knowledge of SWIFT MT700, MT707, MT734, MT750, and related trade finance messages.
- Familiarity with AML, sanctions screening, and regulatory requirements.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and handle complex cases under tight deadlines.
