The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Payroll Technical Lead to provide SAP Payroll technical assurance across solution design, migration, integration, testing and production-readiness activities. The role works with business stakeholders, delivery teams and vendors to evaluate solutions, challenge technical assumptions and guide evidence-based resolution of payroll issues

Role Boundaries & Decision Authority

The Technical Lead owns SAP Payroll technical assurance, solution challenge, defect analysis and technical readiness recommendations. The role reviews technical evidence, identifies risks and recommends corrective actions or readiness decisions to project stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance across SAP Payroll project activities, ensuring solution quality, technical accuracy, and alignment with business requirements.
  • Review and assess SAP Payroll configurations, migration approaches, and interface designs to ensure technical integrity and identify potential risks or gaps.
  • Investigate complex payroll calculation errors, employee data discrepancies, reconciliation differences, and integration issues, providing guidance on root-cause analysis and resolution.
  • Provide technical expertise in SAP Payroll schemas, Personnel Calculation Rules (PCRs), wage types, retroactive and off-cycle payroll processing, and posting to Finance.
  • Review and validate System Integration Testing (SIT), User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and payroll parallel-run results to ensure payroll accuracy, reconciliation completeness, and resolution of identified defects.
  • Assess data migration outcomes, cutover plans, rollback procedures, and production readiness, providing technical recommendations and highlighting potential risks before go-live.
  • Collaborate with HR, Payroll, Finance, IT, project managers, and implementation partners to resolve technical dependencies, address system issues, and support informed decision-making.
  • Lead technical review discussions, challenge vendor assumptions using supporting evidence, and provide recommendations to ensure appropriate technical solutions are implemented.
  • Maintain technical documentation, testing evidence, defect analysis, decision logs, and operational handover materials to support knowledge transfer and ongoing system maintenance.

Essential Requirement

  •  At least five years of hands-on SAP Payroll experience.
  • Participation in at least two full-cycle SAP Payroll implementations, migrations or major transformation programmes.
  • Deep technical-functional knowledge of payroll schemas, PCRs, wage types, retroactive payroll, off-cycle payroll, reconciliation and posting to Finance.
  • Hands-on SAP ECC Payroll experience, with exposure to S/4HANA migration and its payroll-related landscape or dependencies.
  • Experience reviewing payroll interfaces, data migration, test results and technical solution designs.
  • Proven ability to personally diagnose payroll calculation defects, establish root causes with evidence, validate corrections and explain business impacts.
  • Strong analytical skills, technical documentation capability and confidence challenging design assumptions with stakeholders and vendors.
