Education / qualification

Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field, or an equivalent portfolio of shipped backend work.

Work experience

At least 3 years building backend services in production, with at least 1 year owning a PostgreSQL schema. Supabase or another Postgres-as-a-service platform is an advantage.

Job requirements

1. Must be able to read an existing codebase and make a safe change in it on the first week

2. Fluent in SQL beyond SELECT: joins, indexes, transactions and explaining a slow query

3. Comfortable with Git branching, code review and a CI pipeline that blocks on failing tests

4. Written English clear enough for a pull request a client's engineer can review

Knowledge

1. HTTP, authentication (JWT, OAuth) and the common API security mistakes

2. PostgreSQL internals as far as indexes, locks and query plans

Skills

1. Node.js or Python backend services shipped to production

2. Writing a migration that can be rolled back

Behavioural

1. Asks for the specification to be clarified before coding against a guess

2. Says when an estimate was wrong as soon as it is known, not at the deadline

The objective of the job

Build and run the APIs and databases behind the systems Mode Fair delivers for its clients, so that each release ships on time and stays up under real traffic.

Key responsibilities

1. Design and implement REST APIs in Node.js or Python against an agreed specification

2. Model and migrate PostgreSQL schemas, including row-level security where the client's data demands it

3. Write unit and integration tests so that every pull request carries proof it works

4. Investigate production incidents from logs and metrics, fix the cause, and write up what changed
