JOB DESCRIPTIONLaboratory Assistant

Department: Academic / Laboratory
Position: Laboratory Assistant
Reports To: Head of School / Laboratory Manager / Lecturer-in-Charge
Employment Type: Full-Time

1. JOB PURPOSE

The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for supporting the smooth, safe, and efficient operation of the laboratory and assisting lecturers, students, and academic staff in laboratory-related activities. The position involves preparing laboratory facilities, equipment, materials, and practical resources, maintaining proper laboratory standards, and ensuring compliance with institutional health, safety, and operational procedures.

2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIESA. Laboratory Preparation and Operations

  • Prepare laboratories, equipment, materials, tools, and other resources required for practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, and academic activities.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment and facilities are clean, functional, properly arranged, and ready before practical sessions.
  • Assist lecturers and academic staff during laboratory sessions and practical classes.
  • Set up and dismantle laboratory equipment before and after classes or activities.
  • Ensure adequate availability of laboratory supplies, consumables, chemicals, tools, and other necessary materials.
  • Assist in receiving, checking, storing, and organising laboratory materials and equipment.

B. Equipment Management

  • Maintain an updated inventory of laboratory equipment, tools, instruments, materials, and consumables.
  • Conduct routine checks on laboratory equipment and report any malfunction, damage, loss, or maintenance requirements to the relevant supervisor.
  • Ensure equipment is properly stored and handled according to manufacturer and institutional requirements.
  • Assist in arranging servicing, calibration, repair, and maintenance of laboratory equipment where required.
  • Maintain proper records of equipment usage, maintenance, servicing, and calibration.

C. Student and Lecturer Support

  • Provide basic operational assistance to students and lecturers during practical sessions.
  • Assist students in the proper use and handling of laboratory equipment and facilities.
  • Ensure students follow laboratory rules, procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Support lecturers in preparing practical demonstrations, experiments, assessments, and other laboratory activities.
  • Assist academic staff with laboratory-related activities, projects, workshops, exhibitions, and events.

D. Health, Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure laboratories are maintained in a safe, clean, and organised condition at all times.
  • Monitor compliance with laboratory safety rules and institutional health and safety procedures.
  • Ensure appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available and used where required.
  • Handle chemicals, biological materials, tools, equipment, and other laboratory materials in accordance with approved safety procedures.
  • Ensure proper labelling, storage, handling, and disposal of laboratory materials and waste.
  • Immediately report accidents, incidents, unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or potential hazards to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Assist in emergency preparedness, including maintaining accessibility of first-aid kits, fire extinguishers, emergency equipment, and safety signage.

E. Inventory and Stock Control

  • Maintain accurate records of laboratory stocks, consumables, chemicals, equipment, and other materials.
  • Monitor stock levels and inform the relevant supervisor when replenishment is required.
  • Assist in preparing purchase requisitions for laboratory materials and equipment.
  • Check deliveries against purchase orders and ensure received items are in good condition.
  • Organise laboratory storage areas to ensure materials can be located easily and safely.
  • Monitor expiry dates and usage of consumable materials where applicable.

F. Documentation and Administration

  • Maintain proper laboratory records, including equipment registers, inventory records, maintenance records, usage logs, and safety checklists.
  • Assist in preparing laboratory reports, forms, checklists, and other documentation as required.
  • Maintain records of practical sessions, equipment usage, damages, and incidents.
  • Assist with documentation required for internal audits, quality assurance, accreditation, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure laboratory documentation is properly filed and readily available when required.

G. Laboratory Cleanliness and Maintenance

  • Ensure work areas, equipment, benches, storage areas, and laboratory facilities are kept clean and orderly.
  • Perform routine cleaning and basic maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities within the scope of the position.
  • Ensure waste is segregated, stored, and disposed of appropriately.
  • Coordinate with the relevant department for cleaning, pest control, repairs, and other facility-related matters where necessary.

H. Academic and Institutional Support

  • Support laboratory-related activities for teaching, learning, research, training, workshops, exhibitions, and institutional events.
  • Assist in preparing laboratories for inspections, audits, accreditation visits, and other official activities.
  • Cooperate with lecturers, Heads of School, academic departments, administration, IT, facilities, and other relevant departments.
  • Participate in meetings, training programmes, safety briefings, and professional development activities as required.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities reasonably assigned by the Head of School, Laboratory Manager, or Management from time to time.

3. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Science, Engineering, Laboratory Technology, Health Sciences, or a related field, depending on the laboratory's requirements.
  • Relevant laboratory experience in an educational institution, research facility, industry, healthcare, or related environment will be an advantage.
  • Fresh graduates may be considered for entry-level positions where appropriate.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory equipment, procedures, safety practices, and inventory management.
  • Good computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft Office applications.

Performance may be assessed based on:

  • Laboratory readiness and availability for scheduled practical sessions.
  • Accuracy and completeness of inventory and equipment records.
  • Proper maintenance and safe operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Compliance with laboratory safety procedures.
  • Timely reporting of damaged, missing, or malfunctioning equipment.
  • Effective management of laboratory consumables and stock levels.
  • Cleanliness, organisation, and overall condition of laboratory facilities.
  • Quality and timeliness of support provided to lecturers and students.
  • Compliance with institutional policies, SOPs, and quality assurance requirements.

6. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Laboratory Assistant is expected to:

  • Comply with all institutional policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: RM2,300.00 - RM2,500.00 per month
