Commencement Date: Immediate
Salary Range: RM5,000 - RM7,000
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Process Engineer to support upstream mining and In-Situ Leaching (ISL) operations, as well as downstream mineral recovery and the rare earth element (REE) separation plant. The successful candidate will develop and optimise processes, support plant commissioning and operations, and improve recovery, product purity and resource efficiency while meeting process safety and environmental requirements.
Scope of Work and Responsibilities
To develop and optimise process systems across upstream leaching, mineral recovery and downstream REE separation plant operations.
To evaluate ISL solution chemistry, injection and recovery flow rates, reagent dosing and feed quality for subsequent recovery and separation.
To develop and optimise separation plant processes, including solvent extraction, scrubbing, stripping, precipitation, filtration, drying and calcination, where applicable to the selected process route.
To establish plant operating parameters, including pH, temperature, flow rates, phase ratios and reagent concentrations, to achieve recovery and product purity targets.
To prepare and update mass and energy balances, process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and process control requirements.
To plan laboratory tests and pilot trials, assess separation selectivity and impurity removal, and recommend operating conditions for plant scale-up.
To monitor throughput, recovery, product quality, chemical consumption, energy and water use, and investigate losses, deviations and plant bottlenecks.
To troubleshoot leaching and separation plant issues with operations, maintenance and laboratory teams, and implement corrective actions.
To prepare process calculations and equipment specifications, and evaluate supplier proposals for extraction units, pumps, tanks, filters and other plant equipment.
To support plant design reviews, installation verification, commissioning, start-up and performance testing, and confirm process readiness for safe operation.
To develop standard operating procedures for site and separation plant activities, including start-up, shutdown and abnormal conditions, and train operating personnel.
To participate in process hazard reviews, risk assessments and management of change for process and plant modifications.
To coordinate chemical handling, effluent treatment, water recycling and residue management with safety and environmental personnel.
To prepare technical reports and improvement proposals, and coordinate with upstream, technology, project, operations and quality teams on plant performance and process integration.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or a related recognised engineering discipline.
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in process engineering, hydrometallurgy, mineral processing or chemical processing, including at least 2 years of hands-on experience in plant operations, commissioning or process optimisation.
Practical experience in a mineral separation or chemical processing plant is required. Experience in REE separation, solvent extraction or related purification processes is preferred.
Sound knowledge of leaching, separation processes, mass and energy balances, fluid flow and process control.
Ability to prepare and interpret PFDs, P&IDs, process calculations and technical specifications, and troubleshoot plant performance issues independently.
Experience in pilot trials, process scale-up, plant start-up or commissioning is an advantage.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and relevant engineering software; experience with process simulation software is an advantage.
Registration with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) as a Graduate Engineer is preferred.
