Job Description

Responsibilities

Job summary:

Lead the Group’s budgeting, forecasting and financial performance analysis to support business decisions and improve profitability. Partner with senior management and project teams to optimise project margins, working capital and costs, while developing the Group’s financial analytics and reporting capabilities.

Key responsibilities:

a) Budgeting and forecasting

  • Lead the annual budget cycle: timetable, templates, driver assumptions, consolidation of entity and project budgets, challenge sessions with management, and the final budget pack for approval.
  • Build and run a rolling forecast, updated monthly or quarterly, driven by the project portfolio, the order book and pipeline conversion, and the cost base.
  • Maintain a rolling 30/60/90-day cash forecast in support of the funding and liquidity decisions.
  • Build scenario and sensitivity models for decisions such as new contract awards, market entry, capacity investment and funding structures.

b) Management reporting and analysis

  • Own the monthly management reporting pack end to end.
  • Explain actual results against budget, forecast and prior period in terms of business drivers — volume, price, mix, productivity and timing — not account movements.
  • Make sure every pack carries a forward-looking view: what has changed in the outlook, which risks and opportunities have moved, and what management needs to decide.
  • Present the results to the senior management, and follow the actions that come out of the review through to completion.

c) Margin and cost optimisation

i. Project margins:

  • Build and maintain a forecast of final cost (estimate at completion) and cost to complete for every live project.
  • Track how margin moves from tender to completion, and explain where it slips.
  • Work with the Commercial and Contracts team on the financial position of variations, claims and extension-of-time matters.
  • Set an evidence-based approach to accruals and revenue recognised as work progresses on unsettled claims, and keep the work-in-progress position defensible to auditors.

ii. Working capital

  • Analyse how quickly each project turns work into cash: the lag from progress to billing to payment, retentions, advance payments and how payments to subcontractors line up with receipts from clients.
  • Identify the projects that tie up the most cash, and recommend changes to commercial terms, billing discipline and collections.

iii. Tender pricing

  • Review margin, contingency and cash profile before submission; set guidelines for loading corporate costs into bids; and compare each awarded project’s margin as bid with its margin as delivered, so that each round of pricing improves on the last.

iv. Corporate overhead

  • Analyse the central cost base by department, cost type and cost per head, benchmark it against the scale of the business, and bring forward a prioritised cost optimisation programme with quantified savings and named owners.

d) Business partnering and decision support

  • Act as the finance partner to project directors and senior management. Be close enough to the live decisions that the financial view arrives before the decision is made, not after.
  • Prepare investment cases, contract and partnership evaluations, and the financial sections of papers to management.
  • Challenge assumptions constructively and with evidence, including assumptions made outside Finance. Visit project sites as needed to verify progress and understand the cost position at first hand.

e) Special projects

  • Lead or contribute to special projects as assigned by the Group CFO.
  • These may include process improvement, standard operating procedures, systems and automation initiatives, and cross-departmental initiatives that improve how the group plans, prices and controls its work.

f) People leadership

  • Lead, coach and develop a small commercial finance team. Set clear objectives, review work to a high standard, and build the team’s capability in analysis, modelling and business partnering.
  • Arrange cover so that budgeting, forecasting and the reporting pack do not depend on any one person.

Job requirements:

  • Professional accounting qualification: CIMA, ACCA, ICAEW, CPA Australia or MICPA, and eligible for membership of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants.
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience, including at least 4 years in FP&A or commercial finance within construction, engineering, EPC, MEP contracting or a similar project-based business.
  • Hands-on experience forecasting final cost and margin on live projects, managing work-in-progress, and recognising revenue over time under MFRS 15 or IFRS 15.
  • Has run, rather than only contributed to, a budget and forecasting cycle.
  • Strong financial modelling: driver-based, scenario-capable models that others can follow and audit.
  • Experience working across several entities and currencies.
  • Strong analytical, communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to partner effectively with engineers, project managers and senior management.
  • Experience in data centres, mission-critical facilities or technically complex MEP projects would be an added advantage.
  • Experience with Oracle NetSuite, Power BI or comparable business intelligence tools would be an added advantage.

Attributes we are looking for:

  • Commercial curiosity: goes past the variance to the cause, and on to what can be done about it.
  • Comfortable working with incomplete information. Makes a reasoned call, states the assumptions, and refines as the picture firms up.
  • Credible with engineers and project managers as well as with finance colleagues. Willing to go on site to understand the work.
  • Raises bad news early and constructively.
  • High personal standards of accuracy and confidentiality.

Benefits:

  • Additional leave
  • Cell phone reimbursement
  • Health insurance
  • Parental leave
  • Professional development
