Job Description

Responsibilities

The position reports directly to the Group Internal Auditor (GIA) and is responsible for planning, leading, and completing assigned internal audit engagements across the Hibiscus Group. Working collaboratively with the GIA and Senior Manager, the Manager develops the audit scope, approach, work programme, resource requirements, and timeline, considering emerging risks, previous audit results, and Audit and Risk Management Committee (ARMC) priorities.The Manager serves as the primary point of contact for the audit assignment, engages relevant stakeholders, and leads discussions to obtain the necessary information, explanations, and supporting evidence. The Manager also supervises the audit team, ensures the timely completion of quality audit work, and prepares clear, evidence-based, and value-adding reports with practical recommendations. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Audit Strategy, Planning and Resources
  • Assess the nature, complexity, and risk profile of each assignment and recommend suitable audit techniques, testing methods, and areas requiring deeper review.
  • Review audit progress against key milestones, resolve execution issues, and adjust priorities, resources, or procedures when new risks, information gaps, or operational constraints arise.
  • Manage complex or significant matters arising during the audit and keep the Senior Manager and GIA informed of key developments, actions taken, and matters requiring guidance or escalation. Ensure the audit team performs its work professionally and objectively, with conclusions supported by sufficient evidence.
  • Audit Implementation / Execution
  • Take full ownership of assigned audits and drive each engagement from commencement to completion to ensure that audit objectives are achieved and key risks are properly assessed.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Senior Manager and GIA throughout the audit to discuss significant issues, emerging findings, and proposed conclusions on a timely basis.
  • Prepare and review audit working papers to ensure they are complete, properly organised, cross-referenced, and consistent with the reported findings.
  • Proactively obtain relevant information and evidence, engage the appropriate stakeholders, conduct effective interviews, exercise professional judgement, pursue relevant lines of enquiry, and promptly resolve information gaps or inconsistencies.
  • Apply strong analytical and critical-thinking skills to identify concealed or indirect evidence, connect information from multiple sources, map events and relationships, test inconsistencies, and develop a complete understanding of complex audit matters.
  • Execute audits within the agreed timeline, monitor progress closely, assess the accuracy and completeness of findings, and ensure that all facts and supporting evidence are properly verified before inclusion in the audit report.
  • Audit Closure and Exit Meeting
  • Finalise audit findings and proposed recommendations to ensure that they are clear, accurate, evidence-based, and ready for discussion with management.
  • Discuss significant audit issues and proposed conclusions with the Senior Manager and GIA before the exit meeting, and address any matters that require further clarification or validation.
  • Present audit findings clearly during exit meetings, explain the supporting facts and risks, respond to management’s questions, and consider relevant information or evidence provided during the discussion.
  • Lead the discussions with management and ensure that disagreements or differing views are addressed fairly, professionally, and constructively.
  • Anticipate likely questions, challenges, and areas of disagreement before the meeting. Maintain a strong command of the audit facts and supporting evidence, remain alert to new information, and manage difficult discussions with confidence, professionalism, and sound judgement.
  • Audit Reporting
  • Discuss confirmed audit issues and proposed conclusions with the Senior Manager and GIA at an appropriate stage, either before or during preparation of the draft report, based on the nature and complexity of the issues.
  • Distil complex audit matters into clear, concise, and easily understood reports, supported by diagrams, charts, tables, or other suitable visual formats where appropriate.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and well-structured audit reports that accurately present the findings, root causes, risks, implications, and practical recommendations.
  • Address review comments from the GIA and Senior Manager promptly, and ensure that each report is factually accurate, supported by sufficient evidence, and readily understood by its intended audience.
  • Post-Audit Activities
  • Complete the audit file and ensure that all working papers, evidence, approvals, and final documents are properly organised and retained in accordance with Internal Audit requirements.
  • Follow up on agreed corrective actions, assess the adequacy of evidence submitted by Management, verify implementation where necessary, and report overdue or unresolved actions to the Senior Manager and GIA.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to audit team member after each assignment to strengthen their understanding, improve report quality, and enhance overall audit competency.
  • Identify recurring audit matters and fieldwork challenges, capture lessons learned, and recommend process improvements to enhance the quality and effectiveness of future audits.
  • Investigations and Special Reviews
  • Plan and execute assigned investigation procedures, identify relevant persons and records, and pursue appropriate lines of enquiry based on the nature of the allegation or issue.
  • Gather, preserve, and analyse evidence from multiple sources, reconstruct events and relationships, test inconsistencies, and maintain a clear and complete record of the investigation work performed.
  • Conduct interviews professionally, ask relevant and probing questions, assess the reliability of explanations provided, and follow up promptly on gaps or conflicting information.
  • Keep the Investigation Lead, Senior Manager, and GIA informed of significant developments, emerging risks, evidence gaps, and matters that require further direction or escalation.
  • Prepare clear, objective, and well-supported investigation findings and recommendations, while maintaining confidentiality, independence, fairness, and proper handling of sensitive information.
  • Support for Ad Hoc Projects
  • Adjust audit priorities, work plans, and team resources promptly to accommodate ad hoc assignments while minimising disruption to ongoing audits and agreed timelines.
  • Take ownership of assigned ad hoc work and ensure its timely and effective completion in accordance with the required objectives and professional standards.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Qualification and Education:
  • Posses at least a bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Engineering, Project Management, or another relevant discipline from a recognised university.
  • For candidates with an accounting or finance background, a relevant professional qualification such as Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), or an equivalent qualification is preferred.
  • For candidates with a technical background, preferred disciplines include Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Petroleum Geoscience, or other fields relevant to the Group’s operations. Professional qualifications such as Chartered Engineer, Professional Engineer, Project Management Professional (PMP), or an equivalent qualification relevant to the candidate’s discipline would be an added advantage. Experience in exploration, subsurface evaluation, reservoir management, drilling, production, asset integrity, maintenance, or project management will also be advantageous.
  • A master’s degree in a related discipline is an advantage.
  • Work Experience:
  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience, including substantial experience in auditing, internal audit, risk management, assurance functions, contracting and procurement, or engineering and project management roles within complex operational and project environments.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading audit engagements, supervising audit teams, reviewing audit deliverables, and communicating key findings and recommendations to senior management.
  • Exposure to the oil and gas or energy sector is highly desirable.
  • Skills and Knowledge:
  • Strong knowledge of internal auditing standards, internal control frameworks, risk management, and corporate governance principles.
  • Sound understanding of oil and gas operations, industry practices, regulatory requirements, and operational risks relevant to upstream exploration and production activities.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to understand complex operational, financial, technical, and commercial matters.
  • Effective leadership and people-management skills, with the ability to guide, develop, and motivate audit team members.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills, with sound professional judgement and an investigative mindset.
  • Ability to analyse matters in depth, connect fragmented information, identify inconsistencies, retain key facts, and maintain a strong command of audit evidence and events.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder-management, and report-writing skills, with the ability to present complex matters clearly to Management, the ARMC, and the Board.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and competing priorities, remain alert and composed under pressure, and respond effectively to changing circumstances.
  • Strong work ethic, resilience, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to continuous learning and thorough audit work.
  • Strong commitment to integrity, independence, confidentiality, professional objectivity, trustworthiness, and effective time management.
  • Training and Certification:
  • Relevant engineering or technical certifications related to oil and gas operations, asset integrity, or project management are preferred and will be considered a strong advantage.
