Job Description

The Patani Lab at NUS is seeking motivated researchers with expertise in molecular and cellular biology, particularly induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) biology and/or RNA biochemistry, to investigate RNA metabolism and transcriptional dynamics in neurodegenerative diseases.

The successful candidate will report to Prof. Patani and join a multidisciplinary team of experimental and computational scientists investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying neuronal degeneration and glial dysfunction.

The role involves applying advanced molecular techniques and next-generation sequencing approaches to study dysregulated RNA metabolism, aberrant splicing and their impact on cellular homeostasis. The candidate will contribute to experimental design, target identification, validation and mechanistic studies, with opportunities to lead research projects in consultation with Prof. Patani.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and manage research projects to achieve agreed objectives and timelines.
  • Collaborate with experimental and computational scientists to support research progress and outcomes.
  • Plan, conduct and oversee experiments, ensuring appropriate supervision and technical support.
  • Analyse, interpret and maintain accurate records of experimental data and findings.
  • Prepare research manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present research findings at internal meetings, scientific conferences and collaborative discussions.
  • Train and supervise students and research staff in laboratory techniques and experimental protocols.

Teaching, Research and Development

  • Contribute to teaching and training activities relevant to the research area, as required.
  • Support multidisciplinary research initiatives aligned with departmental and institutional objectives.
  • Collaborate with internal and external research partners to advance scientific discoveries and publications.

General Duties

  • Maintain accurate, complete and up-to-date research records while ensuring confidentiality where applicable.
  • Participate in departmental, institutional and research-related meetings.
  • Uphold high standards of research integrity, professionalism and ethical conduct.
  • Support resource-efficient research practices in line with NUS' sustainability objectives.
  • Comply with all relevant departmental, institutional and NUS policies, procedures and regulations.

The above responsibilities are not exhaustive. The successful candidate may be required to undertake other duties reasonably assigned within the scope of the position.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrable prior experience in molecular biology, esp. probing RNA-protein interactions e.g. RIP, CLIP, RBPome capture methods (Required)
  • Prior experience investigating transcriptional, splicing and/or post-transcriptional mechanisms of disease (Required).
  • Demonstrable experience working in a research environment conducting rigorous/thorough investigations (Required).
  • Prior experience working with iPSCs and directed differentiation (Desired).
  • Some knowledge/interest in molecular biology and neuroscience (Desired).
