Help students find the words to express their ideas, understand what they read and become more confident communicators.
At Ancourage Academy, you will teach small classes of up to six students and contribute to the curriculum and resources that support their learning. You will have opportunities to develop your teaching practice, work with advanced AI tools and build skills in writing, communication, digital content and programme development.
We welcome educators who want to develop a long-term career and take an active role in improving how English is taught. Your teaching assignments will reflect your subject knowledge, experience and the levels you can confidently teach.
We welcome applicants with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
Primary English, including reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, composition and oral communication.
Secondary English, including comprehension, situational and continuous writing, language use and oral communication.
English Literature at relevant Secondary, JC, IP or IB levels.
Relevant IP or IB English courses, according to your familiarity with their content and assessment requirements.
English Language, Literature and different examination courses require distinct expertise. Applicants may specialise in a particular subject or age group; broad coverage is an advantage where supported by demonstrated capability.
Plan and conduct engaging regular, trial and replacement lessons within your assigned teaching scope.
Help students understand texts, organise their ideas and communicate with greater clarity and confidence.
Teach writing as a process, including planning, drafting, revising and responding to feedback.
Identify individual learning gaps and adapt explanations, examples and activities to students’ needs.
Mark work carefully and provide specific feedback that students can apply to their next attempt.
Develop and improve worksheets, reading activities, model responses, assessment tasks and marking guides.
Check resources for accuracy, clarity, appropriate difficulty and alignment with the relevant syllabus.
Maintain useful records of student progress and communicate learning goals and areas for improvement to parents.
Share classroom observations and teaching approaches with colleagues to improve lessons and curriculum.
Participate in agreed training and development projects that support your professional growth and the academy’s programmes.
You will receive company-funded access to selected advanced AI tools, including frontier models approved for the academy’s work, together with practical guidance on using them effectively.
Applications within this role may include:
Developing initial ideas for writing prompts, discussion questions and differentiated practice.
Comparing explanations and approaches to help students understand a language concept.
Drafting and refining lesson resources, presentations and teacher feedback frameworks.
Organising research and preparing materials for writing or communication workshops.
Improving recurring workflows such as resource organisation and progress summaries.
You will learn how to write effective prompts, evaluate outputs and recognise errors, weak reasoning or unsuitable language. Teachers remain responsible for the accuracy, syllabus relevance and age suitability of materials, and for handling student information appropriately.
Prior AI or coding experience is helpful but is not required.
Your development can extend into communication, publishing, digital content and project work.
Depending on your interests and readiness, an agreed development focus may include:
Writing and editing clear content for different audiences.
Presentation design and public speaking.
Developing digital learning resources or short educational explanations.
Planning and facilitating writing workshops or parent learning sessions.
Using spreadsheets and simple data analysis to understand learning patterns.
Coordinating a resource-development project and giving constructive feedback to colleagues.
For example, you could help create a shared writing assessment framework, develop a reading programme or plan a workshop that helps parents support writing at home.
Projects will be selected with your interests, capabilities and the academy’s needs in mind, with assigned work included within your working hours.
Your development will include onboarding to our teaching approaches, curriculum standards and working tools, alongside opportunities for feedback and collaboration.
Potential directions include:
Senior English Teacher: deepen your teaching expertise and support colleagues in improving classroom practice.
English Subject Lead: contribute to teaching standards, resource quality and subject planning.
Curriculum Lead: take greater responsibility for learning sequences, assessments and programme development.
Programme or Digital Learning Project Lead: coordinate an agreed workshop, learning resource or technology-supported initiative.
Team or Centre Leadership: develop responsibilities in people support, planning and programme delivery where suitable opportunities arise.
Progression will depend on demonstrated capability, teaching quality, contribution and available responsibilities. There is room to build a career through subject expertise as well as leadership.
Strong English language proficiency and sound knowledge of the subjects and levels you wish to teach.
The ability to explain ideas clearly and respond constructively when students struggle.
Careful judgement when reviewing writing, interpreting texts and assessing student work.
An interest in curriculum development and a willingness to improve resources through classroom feedback.
Reliable preparation, organisation and follow-through.
Professional communication with students, parents and colleagues.
Curiosity about new teaching approaches and digital tools.
An interest in building a long-term career with the academy.
Relevant teaching experience is welcome. Strong newer educators and career changers who can demonstrate subject competence, communication skills and willingness to learn are also encouraged to apply.
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate strong teaching ability across multiple English levels and/or additional relevant subjects. English Language and English Literature are distinct specialisations and will be assessed separately. Strong subject specialists are also welcome, with teaching assignments matched to demonstrated expertise.
