Job Description

Responsibilities

The surgical department consists of a dedicated team of six surgeons who provide both elective and emergency surgical care. Their services encompass breast surgery, general surgery, upper and lower gastrointestinal procedures—including endoscopy—and the provision of an acute GI bleed service. Specialists in vascular surgery, urology, neurosurgery and interventional radiology further support the management of complex polytrauma. The team employs a hybrid on-call rota to ensure a continuous, high-quality, patient-centered surgical service at the Cayman Islands Hospital, in collaboration with fellow consultant surgeons, registrars, and clinical interns rotating throughout the institution. Most cases are referred from within the Health Services Authority (HSA), in addition to referrals from private sector providers and other local hospitals. This post is to fill a vacated role, and the team is encouraging applications from candidates with experience in either upper gastrointestinal/hepatobiliary surgery or reconstructive/oncoplastic breast surgery to complement and enhance current care.

Primary Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will manage general surgical inpatients, coordinate referrals, and support the on-call rota. Duties include providing outpatient clinics at three HSA sites in Grand Cayman, with occasional outreach at Faith Hospital as agreed. The role involves attending tumour board and morbidity and mortality meetings, developing surgical care guidelines, and assisting with junior staff training. Participation in community health promotion and strategic planning through various committees is also required.

Qualification & Experience:

The successful applicant must possess a Medical Degree and post graduate qualifications in General Surgery (MBChB and FRCS or MBBS and DM General Surgery) or equivalent from a recognized institution. Must have a minimum of five (5) years post specialization hospital working experience in the specialty. Candidates with endoscopy experience would be an asset. The candidate must also hold a valid license from either of the seven (7) jurisdictions; Jamaica, Canada, USA, United Kingdom, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia as specified in the Health Practice Law, Cayman Islands. The ability to work well within a multidisciplinary team is essential.

A remuneration and benefits package, commensurate with experience and qualifications will be offered to the successful candidate.
