Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Field Biologist role based in Bukit Mertajam. The Field Biologist will conduct ecological and wildlife surveys, collect biological samples, and document field observations in various terrestrial and aquatic habitats. Daily responsibilities include planning and executing fieldwork, recording and analyzing data, and ensuring adherence to safety and ethical standards in the field. The role also involves collaborating with laboratory teams to process samples, contributing to research publications and reports, and supporting conservation and sustainability initiatives aligned with USM’s mission. The Field Biologist will work closely with academic staff, students, and external partners to advance research and educational activities.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should possess strong field-based ecology and wildlife skills, including species identification, habitat assessment, and ecological monitoring.
  • Candidates should possess solid research skills, such as study design, data collection, data analysis, and scientific reporting.
  • Candidates should possess relevant laboratory skills for processing and analyzing samples, including basic microbiology techniques where appropriate.
  • Candidates should possess familiarity with biological data management tools (e.g., spreadsheets, GIS or mapping software) and the ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Wildlife Science, or a closely related field.
  • Ability to work safely in outdoor environments, including variable weather and terrain, and to follow established fieldwork protocols.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams and interact with diverse stakeholders.
  • Prior experience in field research, biodiversity surveys, or conservation projects is an advantage.
