Responsibilities

ob Summary
The GA Nurse is responsible for assisting the anaesthetist in providing safe and effective anaesthesia care, preparing anaesthesia equipment and medications, monitoring patients during procedures, and ensuring appropriate post-anaesthesia care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare the operating theatre and anaesthesia equipment before each procedure.
  • Check oxygen supply, suction, anaesthesia machine, airway equipment, monitors, and emergency equipment.
  • Assist the anaesthetist with induction, maintenance, and recovery from general anaesthesia.
  • Prepare and assist with administration of medications as directed by the anaesthetist.
  • Monitor and record the patient's vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, SpO₂, ECG, respiratory rate, and other parameters as required.
  • Assist with airway management and ensure appropriate airway equipment is readily available.
  • Maintain close observation of the patient and immediately report any abnormal changes to the anaesthetist.
  • Prepare emergency medications and equipment and assist during emergencies when required.
  • Maintain accurate anaesthesia and patient monitoring records.
  • Assist in transferring patients safely to the recovery area after the procedure.
  • Monitor patients during the immediate post-anaesthesia recovery period and report any concerns.
  • Ensure all anaesthesia equipment and supplies are properly cleaned, checked, restocked, and ready for the next procedure.
  • Maintain strict infection prevention and aseptic practices.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, SOPs, patient safety standards, and relevant nursing guidelines.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and professional nursing standards.
  • Work closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, scrub nurses, recovery nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in training, audits, quality improvement activities, and continuing professional development.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Nurse Manager or management.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse with a valid Annual Practising Certificate (APC).
  • Diploma / Degree in Nursing from a recognised institution.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Operating Theatre / Anaesthesia / Recovery Nursing is preferred.
  • Experience assisting with General Anaesthesia (GA) procedures is highly preferred.
  • Good knowledge of airway management, patient monitoring, anaesthesia equipment, and emergency procedures.
  • Able to work effectively in a fast-paced operating theatre environment.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Responsible, attentive, and able to respond quickly to emergency situations.
  • Willing to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays when required.
