Job Purpose
The Demi Chef supports the Head Chef in preparing and delivering safe, nutritious, and high-quality meals for students, staff, and school events, in line with international school standards, food safety regulations, and child safeguarding requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation & Service
- Assist in the preparation, cooking, and presentation of daily meals for students and staff.
- Ensure meals meet nutritional guidelines suitable for children and adolescents.
- Support menu execution for special dietary requirements (e.g. allergies, halal, vegetarian).
- Assist in catering for school events, functions, and special occasions.
Kitchen Operations
- Ensure food is prepared and served in compliance with food safety and hygiene standards.
- Maintain cleanliness of workstations, equipment, and kitchen areas at all times.
- Assist with stock control, proper storage of ingredients, and minimising food wastage
- Follow standard recipes, portion control, and kitchen procedures.
Health, Safety & Safeguarding
- Adhere strictly to HACCP, food hygiene, and workplace health and safety regulations.
- Follow school safeguarding and child protection policies at all times.
- Report any health, safety, or safeguarding concerns promptly to the Head Chef or management.
Teamwork & Support
- Work collaboratively with chefs, kitchen assistants, and catering staff.
- Support junior kitchen staff when required.
- Take direction from the Head Chef and assist in daily kitchen planning.
Qualifications & Experience
- Certificate/Diploma in Culinary Arts or related field.
- Minimum 1–2 years’ experience as a Demi Chef or similar role.
- Experience in institutional catering (school, hospital, hotel, or large-scale kitchen) is an advantage.
- Valid food handling and hygiene certification.
Skills & Competencies
- Good knowledge of food preparation techniques and kitchen operations.
- Understanding of nutrition suitable for children and young people.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining quality and hygiene.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and time management skills.
- High level of integrity and professionalism when working in a school setting.
Working Conditions
- Working hours aligned with school schedules; occasional evening or weekend work for events.
- Must be able to stand for long periods and handle kitchen equipment safely.
