SCOPE OF POST

Houseparents should manage efficiently the staffing, organisation, and resources of the House, providing for the safety, good discipline and pastoral care of all students in the House. The aim of the Houseparent should be to provide a secure and stable environment where family values are shared and in which students can develop their self-esteem, express their talents, and fulfil their potential.

The Houseparent is responsible for the overall well-being of the students in the House as well as the smooth day-to-day running of the boarding House. If not personally carrying out a particular task the Houseparent is responsible for delegating it to another member of the House team. Comprehensive procedures and documentation should be in place to ensure that an Assistant or new Houseparent can be readily familiar with the routines and demands of the House. It is hoped that each House should reflect the character and personality of the Houseparent and the House team.

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To be aware of the implications and requirements of the UK National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools for welfare and pastoral care in the House.
  • To ensure that boarding staff, parents and students understand the aims and objectives of boarding in the House, and the principles on which community life in the House and school is based.
  • To develop and manage the Assistant and House Prefect teams, ensuring they have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities, so that they can play their part in carrying out the tasks required of them. Meetings should be held regularly, and periodic reviews of their performance should be undertaken, as directed.
  • To ensure that the individual circumstances, needs, strengths and weaknesses of each student are identified and known by staff as needed, so that individual opportunities, talents and potential are developed and maximised. Assistants must be liaised with to ensure that relevant background circumstances of students are known and discussed.
  • To be aware of and to implement the school’s policies on Safeguarding and welfare, including all relevant policies. The Houseparent should be satisfied, too, that all members of the House team, including senior students are aware of Safeguarding procedures and policy in the school.
  • To support the school’s disciplinary policy and, by encouragement and reward and by a clearly understood and fair system of sanctions, foster an acceptance of the code of conduct of the House and school; to inform the DHP (Pastoral) or Head of any serious misdemeanours.
  • To plan, implement and review structures of staff supervision; to ensure the safety and security (including emotional) of all students at all time when they are in the school’s charge; to ensure, with the school’s assistance, that adequate arrangements for House cover and supervision are in place.
  • To review annually the House’s general Risk Assessment and to inform the DHP whenever matters arise that might affect the level of risk in the House. All school staff are expected to be aware of the school’s Health and Safety Policy as it is pertinent to them.
  • To liaise with the Sanatorium staff to ensure that students’ medical requirements are properly attended to; to encourage students to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
  • To ensure that students’ clothes and personal belongings are used appropriately and stored securely and tidily; to ensure that students treat the belongings of others, and the fabric and furnishings of the House, with respect.
  • To make the House is ready for the return of students at the start of terms, and after breaks; to be ready to welcome boarders and parents at return-times; to make sure the House is left tidy when students depart.
  • To liaise closely with the Housekeeper and domestic staff to ensure the House is well looked after and kept clean throughout.
  • To work with the the Support Staff to ensure maintenance is kept up to date, and a programme of replacement and renewal is in place.
  • To develop, in the students, a collective responsibility to be aware of the difficulties or problems of others, and to offer such support and help for each other as is appropriate.
  • To be responsible for the expenditure of the House funds and to ensure that proper accounts for these and for the students’ House Bank are kept, and produced for the Bursary when requested.
  • To be aware of the academic strengths and weaknesses of students; to liaise with Assistants ensure that relevant background circumstances of students are known and discussed; to ensure that the conditions and supervision in evening work periods (prep) are conducive to effective academic progress.
  • To use every opportunity to cultivate contact and communicate with parents, to ensure that they are fully informed about their child’s progress and welfare; to ensure that family incidents and problems are brought to the attention of those who need to know.
  • To support all events in which students from the House are involved.
  • To keep suitable records of students; progress, welfare, health, emotional problems, achievements and misconduct; to provide such reports and references as may reasonably be required. Detailed end-of-term reports, full UCAS references, Leavers Record Cards, and other references must be completed when necessary.
  • To be aware of the Guardianship arrangements of international boarders, and to communicate with students’ Guardians and Host Families when appropriate.
  • To inform the DHP or, if appropriate, the Head, of any Safeguarding concerns or of any perceived need for referral to outside agencies.
  • To be prepared to offer advice and support on planning and decisions for subject options and higher education choices.
  • To take part in marketing/recruitment exercises as required, including conducting House tours with prospective students, and attending functions when requested.
  • To help ensure the effective communication of school routines and notices etc. for the students in the House.
  • To carry out Risk Assessment and Fire Drills as requested.
  • To attend all Houseparents’ meetings.
  • To participate in the annual self-evaluation programme, and other appraisal processes as required.
  • To help prepare for any school inspections and visits (including Open Days and other marketing initiatives), as required.
  • To carry out any other key tasks which the Head, the DHP, or the Director of Boarding may reasonably assign.
