Job Description
Responsibilities
Quantity surveyors are the cost guardians of construction projects. They begin by preparing detailed cost estimates and plans, which are the financial foundation of any construction project. Their responsibilities include auditing ongoing projects, managing costs effectively and overseeing contract administration.
These professionals work closely with architects, engineers, builders and project owners. They compile a "bill of quantities," a document detailing the materials and work required for the project. They also pay close attention to design changes and evaluate how these changes affect project costs.
It is also common for quantity surveyors to have expertise in areas such as project management, value engineering, risk assessment or supply chain management, allowing them to tailor their expertise to specific aspects of construction cost management.
