About the Research Unit:

The Pest and Disease (P&D) Section’s main goal is to safeguard oil palm productivity and sustainability through research-driven, integrated management of major pests, diseases, and weeds. It aims to minimise yield losses by developing effective control strategies, enhancing early detection and diagnosis, and promoting environmentally responsible approaches such as biological control and integrated pest and disease management. The section also focuses on strengthening scientific understanding of pest and disease ecology, providing technical support to estates, and aligning its programmes with sustainability standards to ensure long-term plantation resilience and efficiency.

Your Role:

We are seeking a Laboratory Assistant to become part of our team. You will play a crucial role in supporting our operations, research and development programs, and administrative functions.

Requirements:

• Possess a Diploma (Biology, Microbiology, Medical Technology, Plant Pathology, and life sciences).
• Candidates with relevant experiences and outstanding academic and leadership achievements in School, University, or for the Community are encouraged to apply.
• Candidates with laboratory experience and/or basic computer skills are preferred.
• Good command of Bahasa Malaysia is required while strong English language skills are considered advantageous.
• Possess strong result-oriented and problem-solving skills, and willing to go extra mile.

Responsibilities:

1. Laboratory

• Preparing culture media, buffers, reagents, and stock solutions
• Sterilising glassware, media, and equipment (autoclaving)
• Operating and maintaining lab equipment (laminar flow cabinets, incubators, autoclaves, microscopes and centrifuges)
• Washing, drying, and organising glassware and labware
• Managing inventory of chemicals, consumables, and biological materials
• Labelling, logging, and proper storage of samples and specimens
• Recording, compiling, and digitising experimental data
• Disposing of biohazard and chemical waste according to safety protocols
• Maintaining cleanliness, biosafety, and general orderliness of the lab
• Documenting and processing samples (leaves, roots, trunks & others)
• Isolating pathogens from infected tissues onto selective/general media
• Sub-culturing, purifying, and maintaining the lab's microbial culture collection
• Producing microbial inoculum for pathogenicity tests and screening trials
• Performing artificial inoculations on seedlings, plantlets, or any form of tissues
• Carrying out disease assessment, symptom scoring, and lesion measurement
• Assisting in DNA/RNA extraction and PCR setup for molecular diagnostics
• Preparing samples for metabolomic or biochemical analysis
• Conducting microscopy of fungal and bacterial structures
• Conducting bioassays for insecticide/ herbicide/ fungicide/ other chemicals efficacy and biocontrol agents
• Providing support for any other activities within the scope of pathology, entomology, weed science, and mammalian pest research, in addition to the responsibilities listed above

2. Nursery

• Assisting in sample collection, census, data recording and compilation

3. Field

• Assisting in leaves, roots, trunks, soil, rodent, insect, water and other biological samples collection

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: RM1,965.00 - RM2,500.00 per month
