A Chargeman (Maintenance) is responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety of electrical systems and equipment in facilities such as factories, commercial buildings, hospitals, hotels, and industrial plants.
Typical job scope includes:
Electrical Maintenance
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on electrical equipment.
- Inspect and maintain switchboards, transformers, generators, motors, and distribution systems.
- Ensure electrical installations are functioning safely and efficiently.
Troubleshooting & Repairs
- Diagnose electrical faults and power failures.
- Repair or coordinate repairs of electrical systems and equipment.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with electrical regulations and safety standards.
- Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and other safety requirements.
- Conduct routine safety inspections and risk assessments.
Monitoring & Operations
- Monitor electrical load, power quality, and energy consumption.
- Operate and supervise high-voltage (HV) or low-voltage (LV) systems, depending on certification level.
- Maintain records of maintenance activities and system performance.
Documentation
- Prepare maintenance reports and inspection records.
- Keep electrical drawings, manuals, and logbooks updated.
- Assist during audits and regulatory inspections.
Team Coordination
- Supervise technicians, contractors, and maintenance staff.
- Coordinate planned shutdowns and maintenance schedules.
- Train junior staff on electrical safety and procedures.
In Malaysia
A Chargeman is licensed by Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga). The exact responsibilities depend on the certification grade (such as AO, A1, A4, BO, B1, B4, etc.), the voltage level, and the type of facility.
For a Chargeman (Maintenance) position in a factory or building, employers typically expect:
- Electrical troubleshooting skills.
- Preventive maintenance experience.
- Knowledge of LV/HV systems.
- Familiarity with generators, UPS systems, and electrical protection devices.
- Understanding of Malaysian electrical regulations and safety requirements.
