Job Summary

The CVD Engineer (ALD / MOCVD) supports translational semiconductor research, bridging fundamental material and process innovation with industry-relevant manufacturing practices. The role focuses on operational engineering control of thin film deposition platforms—including Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), and/or Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD)—within a research fab or pilot line environment. The engineer ensures process robustness, repeatability, and scalability for transfer to industrial partners, while maintaining high operational discipline comparable to leading semiconductor manufacturing fabs. This position is critical in enabling material and process development programs, joint development projects (JDPs), and technology transfer into high-volume manufacturing environments.

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Deposition Operations & Process Control
  • Own day-to-day operational engineering control of ALD, CVD, and/or MOCVD processes in research, pilot, or pre-production lines.
  • Establish and maintain process control frameworks (SPC, control plans, excursions, operating limits) balancing research flexibility with manufacturing rigor.
  • Monitor and control key process KPIs, including film thickness, uniformity, composition, conformality, defectivity, and tool stability.
  • Support rapid troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and corrective actions to ensure high tool uptime and experimental integrity.
  • Translational Research Enablement
  • Enable research-to-manufacturing translation by ensuring deposition processes are scalable, repeatable, and industry-compatible.
  • Support execution of co-developed industry experiments, material screening, and proof-of-concept integration flows.
  • Provide operational and process input to researchers to balance innovation with manufacturability, throughput, and cost considerations.
  • Tool Performance, Matching & Capability Development
  • Support deposition tool performance including qualification, matching, and baseline setup across multiple platforms.
  • Collaborate with Equipment Engineering and tool vendors on reactor characterization, process capability studies, and hardware optimization.
  • Support introduction of new tools, precursors, upgrades, or experimental configurations with proper risk assessment and operational readiness.
  • Process Sustainment, Data Analysis & Continuous Improvement
  • Sustain qualified deposition processes while enabling controlled experimentation through process window characterization and drift monitoring.
  • Analyze experimental and operational data to identify systematic trends, film property variations, and yield-limiting mechanisms.
  • Drive continuous improvement to enhance film quality, process stability, learning cycle time, and experimental throughput.
  • Industry Collaboration & Technology Transfer
  • Work closely with semiconductor industry partners to align process conditions, material targets, and reporting methodologies.
  • Support technology transfer activities including process documentation, baseline definition, and readiness assessments for partner fabs.
  • Participate in technical reviews, project discussions, and joint problem-solving with internal teams and external collaborators.
  • Documentation, Governance & Knowledge Sharing
  • Maintain high-quality process documentation, operating procedures, and experimental run plans.
  • Generate clear engineering reports summarizing film performance, process capabilities, risks, and recommendations.
  • Contribute to best practices for deposition module operations within research fab and industry collaboration programs.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related disciplines.
  • 3–5 years of experience in CVD, ALD, or MOCVD, ideally in manufacturing, pilot line, or applied R&D environments.
  • Strong understanding of thin film deposition fundamentals: surface chemistry, precursor behavior, nucleation, growth mechanisms, and defect control.
  • Experience in process control methodologies (SPC, DOE, fault detection) and operations-focused engineering discipline.
  • Comfortable working with data analysis tools (e.g., JMP, Python, Excel).

Preferred / Added Advantages

  • Hands-on experience with advanced deposition platforms (e.g., single-wafer ALD, batch furnaces, epitaxy reactors).
  • Experience with precursor chemistry, gas delivery systems, and reactor design considerations.
  • Exposure to industry–research collaboration, JDPs, or technology transfer programs.
  • Familiarity with applications in advanced logic, memory, power devices, or compound semiconductors.
  • Strong communication skills across multidisciplinary teams and industry stakeholders.

Key Attributes for Success

  • Strong manufacturing mindset applied to research environments
  • Ability to balance process discipline with experimental flexibility
  • Structured, data-driven problem solving
  • Collaborative and industry-oriented approach
  • High ownership and reliability in high-visibility, cross-functional projects
