JOB SUMMARY

The Chief Engineer leads the engineering and maintenance function of this 460-room, 5-star property, responsible for the efficient operation of the resort’s property and all its equipment, ancillary maintenance and repair services and protection of the Owner’s asset. Structural aspects of the hotel as well as the maintenance of grounds and external facilities all fall within the span of responsibility. Promotes the desired work culture around the five core values of Trust, Integrity, Respect, One Team and Service of the Sutera Harbour Group and the brand ethos.       

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead the overall engineering, maintenance, and facilities management functions of the resort.

• Manage preventive maintenance programs, capital projects, and asset enhancement initiatives.

• Oversee departmental budgets, cost control, and energy management strategies.

• Ensure compliance with all statutory, safety, environmental, and fire regulations.

• Drive operational efficiency, sustainability, and quality assurance standards.

• Manage contractors, vendors, and service providers to ensure quality and cost-effective delivery.

• Support guest satisfaction through prompt and effective technical services.

• Provide technical guidance and strategic recommendations to senior management.

• Develop, lead, and motivate a high-performing engineering team.

HUMAN RESOURCE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Plan manpower requirements and recruitment needs.

• Develop, coach, and evaluate engineering team members.

• Manage staff scheduling, performance appraisals, training, and disciplinary matters.

• Ensure departmental policies, procedures, and service standards are implemented effectively.

• Foster employee engagement, teamwork, and a positive working environment.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Prepare and manage the Engineering Department's operating and capital budgets.

• Monitor departmental expenses and implement cost-control measures.

• Produce financial and performance reports.

• Contribute to the resort's strategic planning and business objectives.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Ensure full compliance with Occupational Health & Safety regulations and company policies.

• Promote a safe working environment through training, inspections, and risk management.

• Maintain emergency preparedness and safety awareness across the department.

• Identify and address workplace hazards proactively.

• Ensure accurate reporting and documentation of incidents, accidents, and safety concerns.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

· Degree of Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Building Services or related Engineering discipline.

· Minimum 8-10 years engineering experience, with at least 3-5 years in a senior / leadership role within a 5-star hotel or large hospitality complex.

· Sound knowledge of Malaysian statutory requirements (DOSH, ST, BOMBA) and relevant competency certification (e.g. Chargeman / Electrical Competency) is an advantage.

· Strong command of M&E systems, building automation, energy management and CAPEX/budget control.

· Proven leadership, problem-solving and vendor-management skills; able to perform under pressure in a 24/7 operation.

· Good command of English and Bahasa Malaysia, both written and spoken.
