We are an early-stage venture building an AI-native operations and finance platform for transport SMEs — combining embedded financial, benefits, and mobility services in a single product. We are pre-product, fast-moving, and hiring our first internal engineer.
This is a founding-engineer role with real ownership. You will set the technical direction, govern the vendors building our platform, define the standards everyone integrates against, and progressively build the AI-native product layer on top. You will report directly to the founder.
Responsibilities
1.Bring Vendors Together
Several vendors are building different parts of the platform. Your job is to make them work as one coherent system.
- Review both vendor codebases to map what exists, what is assumed, and where the systems need to connect.
- Write and own the Integration Specification — the single source of truth for API contracts, event schemas, data naming, versioning, and error handling that both vendors follow.
- Define a shared data model for entities that cross both systems — contracts, invoices, hirers, vehicles, and payments — with consistent fields, statuses, and tenant isolation.
- Run a weekly vendor review: what was built, what drifted from spec, and what needs escalating — and hold the line on architecture.
- Build the integration test suite that proves the two systems actually work together, not just on their own.
2.Building the Core Financial Engine
As the vendor work stabilises, you start building the middleware — the orchestration and intelligence layer that sits above the payment rails.
- Build and ship the first end-to-end, human-plus-agent financial workflow.
- Introduce automation and AI into the workflow progressively, where it genuinely adds value.
3.Build the AI-Native Intelligence Layer
With a solid foundation in place, you design and build the agent layer that makes the product truly AI-native.
- Design and deploy the first production AI agents.
- Build out the intelligence layer on top of the financial engine.
- Grow and lead the engineering team as the company scales.
What we are looking for
You do not need to have done everything below already. We are looking for someone with the technical foundation and product instinct to figure it out fast — and the communication discipline to keep multiple vendor teams building coherently.
Must have:
- Experience: 5+ years building and shipping real software products — not just projects. You have taken a system from first commit to live users and know what breaks along the way.
- Integration: You have designed or governed API integrations across multiple systems.
- Vendor management: You have technically directed or reviewed the work of an external dev team — and held them to a standard, not just accepted what they delivered.
- AI fluency: You use AI tools natively in your own work and are meaningfully faster and better because of them.
- Product mindset: You ask why before how. You have changed a technical approach because you understood the user problem better — not because a spec told you to.
- Communication: You write clearly and precisely. The Integration Specification will be read by vendor engineers and product managers alike.
- Data modelling: You can design a relational data model for a complex domain that handles versioning, multi-tenancy, and audit requirements correctly from day one.
Nice to have:
- A fintech background and an understanding of financial data beyond basic CRUD.
- Hands-on experience with event-driven architecture, webhooks, or message queues in production.
- You have written an integration spec or API design doc that other teams actually followed and maintained.
- Experience with LLM APIs, prompt engineering, or agent frameworks — and a grounded opinion on where agents genuinely help.
- You have worked directly with non-technical operators to turn their pain points into system design decisions.
- You can explain architectural decisions to non-technical stakeholders and make them land — without relying on diagrams alone.
We deliberately kept the must-have list short. If you meet it and the problem genuinely excites you, we want to hear from you. The AI-native architecture, the agent design, the financial integrations — we will build those together. What we cannot teach is the instinct to hold a system together when the vendors are pulling it apart.
Why this role is different
- This is not a greenfield experiment — it is a defined problem with real commercial stakes.
- Own the technical architecture and set the engineering culture from the very first line of internal code.
- Direct access to the founder — no management layer between you and the decisions that shape the product.
- Building platform that combines transport-vertical operations with embedded finance and benefits — you may be building the first.
