- Generate efficient machining strategies using Master cam or equivalent CAM software for milling centers (3, 4 axis) targeting precision gear blanks, housings, flanges, etc.
- Translate engineering drawings, 3D CAD models and tolerance requirements into optimized toolpaths and machining sequences.
- Configure machine setups: fixture design, work holding, coordinate systems, tool libraries, zero-points, datum reference frames.
- Select optimal tools (end mills, face mills, form cutters, gear-cutting mills) and cutting parameters (feeds, speeds, depths) to meet material, tolerance and surface finish requirements (especially for induction-hardened parts).
- Simulate toolpaths, identify collisions, overcuts/undercuts, optimize machining time while safeguarding component integrity and meeting tolerance.
- Manage complex geometries such as internal gear features, splines, flanges, bores, having close tolerances and high surface finish demands.
- Develop machining sequences accommodating subsequent processes (wire-EDM, induction hardening, gear-cutting) so as to maintain dimensional stability and account for heat-treatment distortion.
- Integrate secondary operations like chamfers, deburring allowances, finish passes for hardened surfaces.
- Define and document machine setups and fixture drawing/specification for operators.
- Guide CNC operators in machine loading, origin setup, tool offset management, probe/inspection routines.
- Carry out trial runs, make first article inspections, fine-tune offsets, adjust toolpaths/strategies based on actual machine performance and measurement feedback.
- Validate programmed dimensions via CMM inspection data; iterate programming where required.
- Analyze machining cycle times, tool wear, scrap rates, machine down-time; propose optimizations.
- Maintain master tool database: tool selection records, wear life, cutting parameters records, tool cost analysis.
