ABOUT THE PROJECT

Shaping the Breeze is a Cities of Tomorrow R&D project developing Singapore’s first validated, performance-based natural ventilation (NV) design framework. The project combines IoT field measurement, CFD simulation, machine learning, and occupant behaviour research to produce design guidelines and a decision-support tool aligned with BCA Green Mark. Industry partners include BSD Pte Ltd, Frasers Property Singapore, and GreenZero Solutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Research Assistant (1) - Simulation & Modelling

Set up, run, and post-process CFD simulations across residential, commercial, and educational building typologies using ANSYS Fluent or equivalent
Conduct mesh independence studies, parametric sweeps, and sensitivity analyses across key design variables (orientation, opening size, building geometry)
Develop and train surrogate/machine learning models on validated CFD outputs for rapid design-stage NV prediction
Integrate simulation outputs with field measurement data for model calibration and validation
Maintain structured simulation databases and support preparation of journal publications and technical deliverables
Contribute actively to team project meetings, milestone reviews, and progress reporting
Support preparation of all project deliverables including the CFD validation dataset, performance-based NV guidelines, decision-support tool, and final dissemination package
Participate in stakeholder workshops with BCA, REDAS, and Frasers Property

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s (Honours) or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline
Experience with CFD software (ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, or equivalent)
Familiarity with Python or MATLAB for data processing and ML model development
Knowledge of turbulence modelling (RANS, k-ε) and boundary condition setup is an advantage
Motivated self-starter who can work independently and as part of a team
Interest in sustainable buildings, tropical climate design, or urban environment research
