DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Planning and Delivery
- Develop overall project plans, schedules, budget estimates, and resource requirements for substation projects (e.g. 33kV–132kV).
- Manage the full project lifecycle including design coordination, procurement, construction, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover.
- Monitor project progress against scope, cost, time, and quality, and implement corrective actions where needed.
- Prepare regular project status reports and lead progress meetings with internal teams and clients.
Technical and Engineering Coordination
- Coordinate with design engineers on substation layout, primary and secondary systems, protection and control, and related civil works.
- Review and approve technical documents, drawings, and material submittals to ensure compliance with specifications, standards, and client requirements.
- Support resolution of technical issues on site and ensure engineering changes are properly documented and communicated.
- Ensure all works comply with relevant electrical standards, utility requirements, and company procedures.
Procurement, Contractors, and Stakeholders
- Work with procurement to source major equipment (transformers, switchgear, GIS/AIS equipment, protection relays, cables, panels) and key services.
- Manage contractors and subcontractors, including site supervisors, civil and M&E contractors, and testing/commissioning teams.
- Maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, utility companies, and regulatory bodies, acting as the main point of contact for the project.
- Handle variations, change orders, claims, and contractual communications in line with contract terms.
Safety, Quality, and Compliance
- Enforce strict Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) standards on all project activities, ensuring safe work practices on site.
- Ensure quality control procedures are implemented for installation, testing, and commissioning, and that all inspections and tests are properly recorded.
- Ensure compliance with statutory, utility and authority requirements (e.g. energy commission, local regulations, grid codes where applicable).
- Lead risk identification and mitigation activities throughout the project.
Testing, Commissioning, and Handover
- Plan and oversee pre‑commissioning and commissioning of substation equipment and systems.
- Coordinate energisation activities with clients and utilities, ensuring proper documentation and safety clearances.
- Ensure all as‑built drawings, test reports, manuals, and training are completed and handed over to the client.
- Conduct project close‑out reviews and capture lessons learned for future projects.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or related discipline); professional registration is an advantage.
- Several years’ experience managing high‑voltage substation or power system projects, preferably at 33kV–132kV or above.
- Strong understanding of substation design and construction, including transformers, switchgear (AIS/GIS), protection and control systems, and associated civil works.
- Experience in EPC or utility environments and in managing multi‑disciplinary project teams.
- Familiarity with project management tools (e.g. MS Project, Primavera) and basic cost control.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Strong project management and leadership skills, with the ability to manage multiple stakeholders.
- Solid technical knowledge of power systems, HV equipment, and substation installation and commissioning practices.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and client facing skills.
- Analytical and problem-solving abilities, especially for site and design issues.
- High commitment to safety, quality, and compliance.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage deadlines, and make sound decisions.
