The buying manager is responsible to drive the company’s commercial buying strategy across all product categories. The role owns supplier relationships, category performance, assortment strategy, pricing model and commercial planning to ensure the right products are available at the right place, time, and price.
Key responsibilities
Supplier management
- Develop long-term relationships with strategic suppliers/vendors.
- Negotiate trading terms, pricing, payment terms, rebates, marketing support, and other arrangements (e.g., consignment).
- Conduct regular supplier business reviews and performance evaluation.
- Identify new suppliers and sourcing opportunities.
Commercial & category strategy
- Develop and execute merchandising strategies for all product categories.
- Define category vision, assortment planning, and growth opportunities.
- Curate assortment based on customer needs, emerging trends, and competitive gaps.
- Review inventory health and optimise assortment productivity.
Pricing & promotion strategy
- Manage profitability through pricing, margin, and inventory optimisation.
- Develop promotion calendar and evaluate effectiveness/ROI.
- Monitor competitor pricing and market positioning.
Merchandising
- Establish category merchandising principles and planograms that support customer shopping behaviour.
- Monitor and maintain shelf standards to ensure consistent product availability and display.
Leadership & process improvement
- Lead team members and develop category management capabilities.
- Improve commercial processes, procedures, and decision-making.
- Strengthen reporting, analytics, and continuous process improvement.
Key requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, supply chain or related field.
- 4+ years of experience in merchandising, buying or category management.
- Experience in managing FMCG or consumer goods suppliers.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills, both verbal and written.
- Dynamic, resourceful, and detail-oriented.
