The Global Financial Crimes Surveillance Unit (GFCSU) is part of American Express's Global Financial Crimes Compliance (GFCC) organization within Global Risk & Compliance. GFCSU partners closely with the U.S. Investigations Unit (USIU) to detect, investigate, and mitigate financial crime risk across the enterprise.
GFCSU is responsible for identifying and investigating potentially suspicious financial activity through transaction monitoring, data analysis, and investigative research. The team reviews complex cases involving money laundering, terrorist financing, fraud, sanctions, politically exposed persons (PEPs), and other financial crime risks. When appropriate, GFCSU supports the filing of Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and partners with internal compliance teams to meet global regulatory reporting obligations.
By leveraging advanced monitoring tools, analytical techniques, and cross-functional collaboration, GFCSU helps safeguard American Express from financial crime while ensuring compliance with key regulations, including the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), USA PATRIOT Act, and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). The team's work is critical to protecting the company, supporting regulatory compliance, and assisting law enforcement in combating money laundering, terrorist financing, fraud, identity theft, and other illicit activity.
Minimum Qualifications:
At least two years of experience in one of the following areas is mandatory: AML compliance, transaction monitoring, sanction screening, EDD, regulatory compliance, law enforcement, fraud investigations and other financial crime investigations (two years minimum).
Knowledge of AML legislation and specific financial crime, sector and geopolitical issues.
Fluency in English (spoken and written).
Microsoft Excel proficiency.
Proficiency in researching information for business related purposes.
Proven ability to work with and analyze large amounts of data in order to report critical information.
Effective communication and excellent writing skills.
High level of professionalism, self-motivation, and sense of urgency.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of languages other than English would be a plus.
Certification in Compliance, AML or Financial Crime related fields.
Experience working in KYC, Transaction monitoring, Sanctions or EDD departments
Highly preferred bachelor’s degree (or equivalent). Ideally in one of the following, or similar, fields of study: Law, Justice Studies, Criminology, Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Accounting, or Government & Public Services,
Knowledge of data processing and visualization, dashboarding and reporting, process automation and optimization.
