Job Purpose
The Production Manager is responsible for managing the overall garment manufacturing operations to achieve production, quality, cost, delivery, safety and efficiency targets. The role leads production teams, coordinates with supporting departments and drives continuous improvement to ensure customer requirements and company standards are consistently met.
Responsibilities
1. Production Planning and Execution
- Plan and manage daily, weekly and monthly production activities according to the production schedule and shipment requirements.
- Ensure production targets are achieved in terms of output, efficiency, quality and on-time delivery.
- Allocate manpower, machinery and production capacity effectively.
- Monitor work-in-progress and take prompt corrective action when delays or production bottlenecks occur.
- Coordinate production priorities, style changeovers and urgent orders.
2. People Management
- Lead, coach and supervise production executives, supervisors, line leaders and operators.
- Set clear targets and regularly review individual, line and departmental performance.
- Ensure appropriate manpower planning, deployment and skill allocation.
- Identify training and multiskilling requirements to improve workforce capability and flexibility.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, discipline and effective communication across production teams.
- Manage employee performance, attendance and conduct in accordance with company policies.
3. Productivity and Process Improvement
- Monitor line efficiency, productivity, capacity utilisation and other production indicators.
- Analyse production losses, bottlenecks, downtime and excessive overtime.
- Drive continuous improvement through line balancing, work-study, lean manufacturing and process optimisation.
- Work with Industrial Engineering and related teams to improve operation methods, standard minute values and production layouts.
- Reduce production costs, waste, rework and non-value-added activities.
4. Quality Management
- Ensure garments are manufactured according to approved samples, specifications, workmanship standards and customer requirements.
- Work closely with Quality, Technical and Product Development teams to prevent and resolve quality issues.
- Monitor defect, alteration, rejection and rework rates.
- Ensure corrective and preventive actions are implemented effectively.
- Promote quality ownership throughout the production process.
5. Delivery and Cross-Functional Coordination
- Coordinate with Planning, Merchandising, Material, Warehouse, Cutting, Quality, Technical, Maintenance and other departments.
- Ensure materials, trims, patterns, machinery and technical information are available before production begins.
- Participate in pre-production meetings and production readiness reviews.
- Escalate risks affecting production or shipment timelines and develop recovery plans.
- Provide accurate production updates to management and relevant stakeholders.
6. Machinery and Workplace Management
- Ensure production machinery and equipment are properly maintained and used safely.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance and repair activities to minimise machine downtime.
- Maintain good housekeeping and workplace organisation in accordance with 5S requirements.
- Ensure effective control of tools, needles and sharp objects in production areas.
7. Compliance, Safety and Sustainability
- Ensure compliance with company policies, customer requirements, labour standards and applicable laws.
- Enforce occupational safety and health requirements and promote safe working practices.
- Ensure working hours and overtime are properly planned and controlled.
- Support social compliance, quality, environmental and customer audits.
- Promote efficient use of electricity, materials and other resources, and support waste-reduction initiatives.
- Ensure production records and documentation are accurate and audit-ready.
8. Reporting and Performance Management
- Prepare and review production reports covering output, efficiency, quality, absenteeism, overtime, downtime and delivery performance.
- Analyse performance trends and present improvement plans to management.
- Establish and monitor production KPIs.
- Investigate significant performance gaps and ensure corrective actions are completed.
Qualifications
- Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Garment Manufacturing, Textile Technology, Industrial Engineering, Operations Management or a related field.
- At least 8–10 years of experience in garment manufacturing, including 3–5 years in a managerial position.
- Strong knowledge of sewing operations, garment construction, production planning, line balancing and quality control.
- Experience managing large production teams and multiple sewing lines.
