About the Role

We are looking for a Lead Engineer, AI Agents & Backend Platforms to lead the design and development of AI-powered agents and scalable backend platforms.

In this role, you will build autonomous AI agents that can reason, use tools, interact with APIs and databases, and execute multi-step workflows with minimal human intervention.

You will play a key role in shaping the organisation's AI engineering capabilities, driving technical decisions, establishing engineering standards, and delivering scalable corporate systems.

You will report to the Principal Enterprise Architect – Automation & Integration and work closely with engineering, architecture, and technology teams.

Key Responsibilities

AI Agent Development

• Design and develop AI agents and autonomous workflows capable of planning, reasoning, decision-making, and task execution.
• Build AI solutions using Large Language Models (LLMs), prompt engineering, RAG, and agentic AI frameworks.
• Deconstruct complex business and technical problems into structured workflows suitable for AI implementation.
• Develop reusable agent architectures and components for enterprise use cases.

Backend & System Integration

• Design and develop scalable backend services, APIs, and microservices supporting AI applications.
• Integrate AI agents with external APIs, databases, enterprise applications, and software tools.
• Contribute to system architecture, technical design, and engineering standards.
• Ensure backend platforms are scalable, maintainable, reliable, and secure.

AI Performance & Evaluation

• Improve LLM performance through prompt optimisation, RAG improvements, model evaluation, and workflow optimisation.
• Design and implement evaluation frameworks to measure AI agent accuracy, reliability, performance, and safety.
• Monitor and troubleshoot AI systems in production environments.
• Establish appropriate guardrails, controls, and human oversight for autonomous workflows.

Technical Leadership

• Lead engineering teams and provide technical direction across AI and backend development.
• Make key technical decisions and establish engineering best practices and standards.
• Mentor engineers and promote strong software engineering practices.
• Collaborate with architects, product teams, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable technical solutions.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline; equivalent experience will also be considered.
• 8+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 5 years focused on designing and building scalable systems.
• Proven experience leading engineering teams and driving technical decisions.
• Strong programming experience in Python or other modern programming languages.
• Strong understanding of API design, backend development, databases, microservices, and system architecture.
• Hands-on experience working with Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI-powered applications.
• Knowledge of RAG, prompt engineering, AI agents, and agentic workflows.
• Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, data structures, and algorithms.
• Experience integrating applications with APIs, databases, and enterprise systems.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to break down complex problems into practical technical solutions.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Good to Have

• Experience with AI agent frameworks or orchestration platforms.
• Experience building production-grade Generative AI applications.
• Experience with LLM evaluation, AI observability, or AI safety/guardrails.
• Experience with cloud platforms and modern DevOps practices.
• Experience designing enterprise-scale AI or automation platforms.
