The origins of today's RUAG Group can be traced back to the 19th century. In 1863, the Swiss Confederation founded the "Federal munitions factory" in Thun.

The RUAG Group's real operational activities began on 1 January 1999, when RUAG Schweiz AG took over the four above-mentioned companies. In 2001, this was renamed to RUAG Holding AG and a new group structure was introduced. This step initiated a period of change from a nationally-focused company specializing in defence to a globally active conglomerate and technology group. This period of change is still ongoing and RUAG, at 15 years old, is considered a relatively new company.

Collaboration, high performance and visionary thinking – these are the values that represent RUAG.  They form the basis for our conduct today and in the future.
