For more than three decades in the Specialty Chemical industry, United Laboratories, Inc. Forged a leadership position in the evolution of environmentally sound alternatives to hazardous cleaning compounds.

In the 1980's, this initiative led to the introduction of a special degreasing agent featuring naturally occurring enzymes and surfactants which was developed for United's waste water treatment market. For several years, this environmentally benign product, Zyme-Flow®, was successfully marketed to Waste Water Treatment Plants across North America for general purpose degreasing and for tertiary filter media remediation.

Early in the 1990's, United began to explore other markets for Zyme-Flow®. It's unique separation capabilities and inherent compatibility with waste stream requirements suggested potential application in the decontamination of petroleum - fouled surfaces and equipment.

A United representative encouraged a major west coast refinery to use Zyme- Flow® to open a 2,000 foot length of a 12-inch outflow line. The effective diameter of the line had been narrowed to 4 inches by bone-dry waste activated sludge. Due to the condition of the pipe, pressurization was not an option.

A solution of Zyme-Flow® product in the range of .5 to 1.25% was introduced resulting in the re-watering of the sludge and complete unblocking of the line. The procedure produced zero hazardous waste and the wash water, sludge and all, was sent directly to the treatment plant.

The work was accomplished entirely by refinery personnel. A decontamination demonstration was then set up to compare Zyme-Flow® and the regularly used competitor's product. The test examined cleaning ability and emulsion forming tendency. Impressed by the side by side comparison, the operations staff decided to utilize Zyme-Flow® in a heated circulation loop to decontaminate their Flexi-Coker.

Laboratories has been servicing the decontamination needs of refiners and petrochemical plants since 1987.  Servicing refineries with a relatively new product called Zyme-Flow®. The origins of this work began in the California markets and slowly developed over several years. United Laboratories took the process national in 1992.

From 1998 through the turn of the century, ULI enjoyed worldwide growth and great success. The technical field staff developed new procedures and methodology and the innovative hands on approach was recognized by their customers. ULI continued to build the sales staff and added a laboratory, chemists/ R&D, and service group. United Laboratories International LLC. became a true recognized leader in the worldwide decontamination market from the late 1990’s and has been so since. The R&D group and field groups worked together to develop several new products and procedures all focused around improving the Zyme-Flow® Process.
